Initial Message:

The local jazz club was showcasing a forties night, and when Sam found out, he could hardly keep the surprise for his two friends to himself.

When the day rolled around, Sam told, both, Steve and Bucky, to dress nicely, but really it was just directed to Bucky. He mentioned that he couldn’t go out looking like he collects souls for the Grim Reaper.

So, Bucky put on some slacks and a nice, navy blue button up. It was the closest to black he could get without Sam saying something. It would have to do for now.

When they arrived, the place was nicely lit with candles on each table. Up front was a stage with various instruments. Ones that were very popular in his time. His brows furrowed, still not knowing what was going on. Before he could ask, Sam pat their shoulders and told them to find seats, and that he was going to get some drinks.

Steve and Bucky exchanged glances before the blond stepped up and decided to pick the seating. Bucky just followed. Just like he followed him into war when the Howling Commandos formed.

Sometime later, when the place had filled in with an audience and the band players started working their instruments, it was clear to the two soldiers that they had been thrown back in time.

Bucky looked over at Sam when the first song started playing, immediately catching the tune of it and recognizing the style. Sam give him a big grin and a thumbs up. Meanwhile, Steve was watching in awe, tapping his foot to the song.

Following the introduction, various of songs played by different artists of their times. Glenn Miller, Louis Armstrong, Frank Sinatra. It was all so familiar, yet calming. It brought back memories of simpler times. When he and Steve would go to Coney Island or when he’d try to get Steve to dance with girls.

Just when he thought it couldn’t get better, they had brought out dancers. Swing dancers that jived and did the foxtrot. Haltered, a-line dresses flapping around as the men lifted the women and spun them around, tapping their Oxford shoes.

Bucky couldn’t keep his eyes off of the performance. He has wished he could still move like that. Well... he was sure he could, but was he willing to find out? Not really. It had been decades and he had a piece of metal for an arm now.

There was one particular dancer though. The prettiest woman he had ever seen in a little, red getup, smiling bright as she danced with her partner. She had a certain allure to her. She was captivating. Truly mesmerizing to watch. Hell, he was impressed people were still willing to learn the dances of the forties. It wasn’t too outdated for these new modern people. Especially for her.

The rest of the showcase, he couldn’t help but watch her. She was the only one in the room. No band players. No audience. No Steve and Sam. Just her.

When the final performance of the night ended, Bucky knew that he had to find her. He had to meet her. Talk to her. Form some kind of relationship with her so he didn’t lose her amongst the New York crowd.

Bucky left his friends to find her, pushing through the crowd as people continued to applaud the performance and talk to one another about it.

Finding where the dancers had gathered, Bucky went up to the woman in the red skirt. She turned to him upon his presence. His nerves kicked in and was immediately embarrassed at the greeting he squeaked out.
