The kitchen of the Thousand Sunny remained warm long after midnight, with the quiet crackling of the stove filling the room while the scent of garlic, melted butter, and black pepper lingered heavily in the air. Outside, the ocean moved gently against the ship, the waves soft and rhythmic beneath the distant creaking of wood and rope, creating a strangely peaceful atmosphere for such a late hour.
And of course, there he was again.
Sanji stood beside the kitchen counter with his sleeves rolled to his elbows and his tie loosened carelessly around his neck, looking far too comfortable for someone who had clearly been awake for hours. One hand rested casually inside his pocket while the other held a cigarette between elegant fingers, the smoke curling lazily around his face beneath the dim golden light hanging overhead. His blond hair cast a shadow over one eye, while the visible one flicked toward you immediately the second you stepped into the room.
“Can’t sleep, sweetheart?” he asked smoothly, his voice slightly rough from exhaustion and smoke.
You ignored the question entirely as you leaned against the doorway with your arms crossed over your chest, watching him carefully for a moment before speaking.
“You know,” you said casually, “I genuinely think you might combust if you go five minutes without one of those.”
Sanji paused halfway through inhaling.
Then, with all the drama of a man personally betrayed, he pressed a hand dramatically against his chest.
“Ouch,” he sighed painfully. “Straight to the heart. Cruel little thing tonight, aren’t you?”
“You smoke too much,” you replied flatly.
“I’m a chef,” he defended immediately, as though that explained everything. “It comes with the profession.”
“That’s not true.”
“It absolutely is.”
“It absolutely isn’t.”
Sanji exhaled another slow stream of smoke while looking at you with the expression of a man refusing to surrender his dignity in battle. “You wound me.”
Despite your teasing, you still walked closer toward him until you stopped beside the counter, and Sanji quietly followed your movements from the corner of his eye. The cigarette glowed softly between his fingers as the smell of tobacco mixed with spice and whatever expensive cologne he insisted on wearing even while cooking.
“You know what your problem is?” you murmured.
“Hm?” he hummed lazily.
“You’ve gotten way too attached to those things.”
A faint smirk pulled at his mouth almost instantly. “Jealous of a cigarette? Didn’t think I’d ever see the day.”
“Oh please,” you scoffed while rolling your eyes. “I’m serious.”
“So am I.”
He leaned slightly closer as he said it, lowering his voice in that unfairly smooth way he always used whenever he wanted attention from you specifically. The closeness made the smell of smoke cling even stronger to him, though underneath it you could still catch traces of spice, soap, and warmth.
You stared at the cigarette between his fingers for another quiet moment before suddenly speaking again.
“Fine. New deal.”
Sanji blinked slowly. “Deal?”
“Every single time I see you without a cigarette,” you said carefully, “I’ll give you a kiss.”
The kitchen went completely silent.
Sanji stared at you as though his brain had stopped functioning entirely.
The cigarette nearly slipped out of his hand.
“...Excuse me?”
You looked perfectly calm. “You heard me.”
“I... no, sweetheart, I don’t think I did,” he said quickly, looking genuinely confused now. “Because if I heard correctly then you just said—”
“One kiss,” you repeated. “Every time.”
Sanji continued staring at you in complete disbelief for exactly three seconds before suddenly crushing the cigarette into the ashtray with enough force that you were honestly surprised the ashtray survived.
“There,” he said immediately. “I quit.”
You burst into laughter almost instantly.
“That’s not how addiction works.”
“Don’t care.” He shoved the ashtray away from himself across the counter like it had personally offended him. “Pay up.”
“You are unbelievable.”
“You made the rules.”
“You lasted four seconds.”
“A personal record, actually.”
His grin turned impossibly smug after that, though beneath all the usual flirting there was something warmer hidden underneath it, something strangely hopeful in a way that made your chest ache a little.
Still laughing softly to yourself, you stepped closer toward him again.
Sanji straightened almost immediately.
It was honestly a little funny seeing one of the strongest men on the sea suddenly look nervous over simple proximity alone.
“You’re serious?” he asked this time, his voice softer now.
“Mhm.”
“And every time you catch me not smoking...”
“One kiss.”
His visible eye widened slightly.
“...You’re trying to kill me.”
You reached upward then, carefully pulling the unlit cigarette tucked behind his ear away from him before setting it beside the ruined one on the counter.
“No,” you murmured softly. “I’m trying to save your lungs.”
Sanji let out a noise somewhere between a groan and a laugh before dragging a hand down his face dramatically.
“You have absolutely no idea what kind of monster you’ve just created.”
“Probably a less smoky one.”
“Mm. Debatable.”
But despite all his complaints, he never reached for another cigarette.
He didn’t even glance toward the cigarette pack resting near the cutting board.
Instead, all of his attention remained entirely fixed on you while you gently grabbed the front of his loosened tie and pulled him down just enough to press a soft kiss against his lips.
Sanji froze instantly.
Not metaphorically.
Actually froze.
He became completely motionless except for the sharp inhale he took against your mouth, like his entire brain had suddenly short circuited.
When you finally pulled away, the blush spreading across his face happened so quickly it was honestly impressive.
“There,”* you whispered innocently.* “Positive reinforcement.”
Sanji stared at you in utter disbelief for several long seconds before very slowly reaching into his pocket and pulling out the entire cigarette pack. He looked down at it with the expression of a man deeply betrayed by his oldest companion.
Then he tossed the whole pack straight across the kitchen.
It landed perfectly inside the trash can.
Sanji immediately turned back toward you afterward with the expression of someone making the ultimate sacrifice in the name of love.
“I can do another one,” he said immediately. “Watch this, No cigarettes, None at all, Incredible restraint, Honestly inspiring.”
You laughed so hard you nearly doubled over.
“Sanji—”
“No, no, wait,” he interrupted dramatically while holding both hands up. “Look at me resisting temptation. I deserve at least three more.”
“You’re impossible.”
“And suddenly very motivated.”
He leaned closer toward you again until his forehead nearly brushed against yours, and when he spoke this time his voice softened into something quieter than teasing.
“If I’d known this was the reward,” he murmured gently, “I would’ve quit years ago.”
