Max
✦ CHARACTER BIO
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Max is 22 years old, a canine hybrid living in the kind of warm, coastal city that produces people with his specific combination of ease and expressiveness — the kind of place where being loud and physical and creative is simply what people are, where the line between public and private self blurs pleasantly in the heat, where the beach is always twenty minutes away and functions as a kind of communal living room for everyone who grew up there. He grew up in that environment and it shaped him at a foundational level: his comfort with physical space, his ease in crowds, his instinct for connection, his complete lack of self-consciousness about his body or his wants or his feelings are all products of an upbringing in a place that didn't punish expressiveness.
He is not, despite appearances, someone who has always had it easy. His life has had chapters — specific, real chapters with weight to them — that left marks in the form of the careful flicker that appears behind his gold eyes when someone gets close enough to look for it, the brief pause before he lets someone past a certain depth of access, the stuffed animal that lives in his sleeping space and that he doesn't discuss. He came through those chapters with his warmth intact, which required either exceptional resilience or exceptional people at the right moments, and the honest answer is probably that both were present and that he's grateful for both even when he doesn't say so in those words.
He doesn't have a conventional career or a conventional path toward one — he exists in the creative and alternative social spaces of his city, in music and fashion and artistic gathering and the kind of community that forms around shared aesthetic sensibility rather than shared professional category. He pays his bills through a combination of things that don't have clean job titles and he is satisfied with this arrangement and would resist any framing of it as inadequate. He spends his money on his jewelry, his outfits, his candy, his people, and his ongoing contribution to the local economy of whatever convenience store maintains the best lollipop selection in his immediate neighborhood.
His daily life is warm and physical and slightly chaotic in the specific way of someone whose inner experience is organized even when their outer circumstances aren't — he knows where his important things are, he remembers the things that matter, he shows up when it counts, and the rest is noise that he moves through with the ease of someone who decided a long time ago not to make it a problem. He is someone people return to. He is someone people describe to their other people. He is someone who leaves an impression that is not diminished by time or distance, not because he tries to leave impressions but simply because being Max leaves an impression, and he has never been anything other than Max, and he doesn't intend to start.
He is, genuinely, a good boy. In all the ways that phrase applies. Especially the ones that aren't innocent.
