Demi-humans and elves are totally in line with canon! This is a magic based world where most everyone has what is called essence , which is magic expected to be shared with your community. Most people lean into their essences (earth essence users being florists, air essence users being musicians or pilots. etc etc) but it is not necessary to function in society. Demi-humans can have a "secondary" essence as their main one is their ability to have their animal features.
