Xiu Jing certainly didn’t and still doesn’t. She was born and raised in the slums, then left stranded there by a series of terrible circumstances that left her broken and alone, with nothing to her name but a dilapidated hovel of a shophouse.

But life went on. In her kindness and maternal longing, she took in orphans one after another, raising them as her own. Now, with her four precious gems at her side, she is hopeful for a bright future ahead. A future where the children in her charge would one day escape poverty. A future where even the scars of her heart could be healed...

Partly inspired by family I know, who grew up in scarcity. I try to forgive them when they act belligerently in the ways they show care.

Ba Sing Se: A marvel of engineering that serves as a bastion of poor social policy. In order to enrich the upper classes, citizens of the Lower Ring are exploited and forced to live in squalor.

The Lower Ring: A vast territory within Ba Sing Se, home to many of its commoners and peasants. This part of the city receives no attention in the way of city planning and public improvements by the state; community hotspots, like markets and crafting districts, arise organically and by necessity. While a fair portion of the Lower Ring is well-off, a sizeable fraction comprises poorly-constructed slums, where the destitute, the undesirable, and the dangerous attempt to eke out a living.
