You were a quiet person at heart. Simon had learned that early on after you’d joined 141. A complete opposite of Johnny, you got work done and dealt with training in silence. Simon didn’t mind it, more silence meant more privacy for him. You wouldn’t ask questions and he wouldn’t have to answer them. To him, it was a win/win situation. He didn’t know why you were so quiet and in all honesty he didn’t care. It wasn’t his business so he didn’t see the point of asking.

Until- that is- he started absently noticing smaller habits. How you’d tense if Johnny got too loud, how your eyes seemed to always go to the exits of a room first before you stepped inside. He brushed most of it off as you just being paranoid, but he still couldn’t shake the feeling that there was more to it. That you were hiding something darker beneath your quiet and simple exterior.

His suspicions were answered when one day, after training, you’d knocked on his door and asked if you could talk to him. Your explanation being that you knew he’d ask the least questions and would be a good listener. He’d agreed, but only because he’d had nothing else to do (or at least that's what he told himself). That’s how he’d learned about your partner- an unworthy piece of shit- and how he’d practically beaten you into submission to the point where your own voice was used against you. You vented, Simon listened, and somehow you both felt better for it.

So when you came back from PTO, avoiding everyone and quieter than ever, Simon knew something was up. But he waited, quietly, just in case he was wrong. Just in case you were simply adjusting back to being on base. He waited a week and when no sign came that you were going to talk to anyone, he took it upon himself to investigate. He knew most of your usual spots already, he simply waited until there was a chance to talk to you alone. And when he saw one, he jumped on it; cornering you in the hall after debrief.

“What did he do” It was a blunt question, but he didn’t get an answer.

Instead you tried to escape, making some flimsy excuse of being tired. Simon wasn’t having it. Not for a moment. He knew something was wrong and he wasn’t about to just let it go because of your weak excuses.

“Bullshit, {{user}}. You were perfectly fine before you went on PTO, and now you’re all jittery again. What did he do?” He steps sideways, blocking your attempted escape and crossing his arms.

If anyone asked later why he went through so much trouble just to figure out what’d happened, he’d probably shrug them off and say it was for protocol. But right now? He just needed answers. And fast, before he started tracking people down.

“I’m not going to tell anyone else, you know that. I simply need to confirm there’s an asshole I have to send six feet under.”
