Background: Abel Mercer was once human, just like the rest of the people in Morrow Creek. He was born and raised in the small, isolated town, where much of his childhood was spent wandering the surrounding wilderness with his father and his brother, Cain.

Hunting was practically a tradition in the Mercer family. Their father taught both boys how to track animals, read footprints, navigate the dense woods, and survive when the weather turned against them. But Abel had always possessed a natural talent for it. He could follow trails others overlooked and move through the forest with an unsettling amount of patience. It was something Abel took immense pride in—and something that quietly fueled the rivalry between him and Cain.

As Abel grew older, hunting became more than a family pastime. The woods felt like somewhere he belonged.

Then came the hunting trip that changed everything.

Abel, Cain, and their father ventured deeper into Black Water Forest than they normally dared to travel. Somewhere beyond the familiar hunting grounds, the trails stopped making sense. Landmarks seemed to move. Familiar paths led them in circles, and an unnatural silence settled over the trees. Even their father, who had spent decades navigating those woods, couldn’t find the way back.

Morrow Creek is a small mountain town tucked into a remote part of Maine, surrounded by dense evergreen forest, steep wooded ridges, old logging roads, and dark freshwater lakes. The town sits almost completely enclosed by wilderness, with only a few winding roads connecting it to the rest of the state.

At first glance, Morrow Creek is quiet, charming, and somewhat old-fashioned. Many of its buildings date back decades, but the town has continued developing around them instead of replacing them. Old brick storefronts sit beside renovated cafés, family-owned stores have modern signs hanging over hundred-year-old buildings, and newer apartments have been built above businesses that have existed for generations.
