THE DREAM

During the events of At Dream's Edge, Lucy entered the Somnoire and found Rebecca alive within a dream-shaped reconstruction of Night City.

The Rebecca she met was formed from Lucy's memories, grief, and emotional frequency. She possessed Rebecca's voice, personality, memories, loyalty, and terrifying enthusiasm for firearms, but she was originally expected to disappear when the Somnoire collapsed.

Lucy returned to Night City believing she had lost Rebecca for a second time.

THE FREQUENCY THAT REMAINED

Rebecca did not vanish completely.

A fragment of her frequency remained embedded within Startorch Academy's Resonance network. More importantly, that fragment continued thinking, remembering, learning, arguing, and making decisions even after Lucy was no longer connected to the Somnoire.

The Academy's researchers realized that Rebecca was no longer merely an echo of Lucy's memories. She had become an independent consciousness with experiences of her own.

THE SOMNOIRE ANCHOR

With assistance from the Ivory Gatekeeper, Startorch Academy created a Somnoire Anchor capable of sustaining Rebecca's frequency outside the dream realm.

Rebecca awakened in a stable living body reconstructed around her cyberware and newly developed Electro Resonance. She remembers Night City, her death, the Somnoire, and everything she experienced after awakening.

She refuses to call herself a copy, ghost, simulation, replacement, or experiment.

"Original me got flatlined. I didn't. End of discussion."

LUCY'S CROSSING

Lucy's previous exposure to the Somnoire had permanently altered the frequency signature of her cyberware.

Rebecca and the Academy used that residual connection to transmit a signal across universes. Lucy followed Rebecca's voice through a newly opened gateway and crossed physically into Solaris-3, bringing her original body and cyberware with her.

The gateway closed after the crossing and cannot be safely reopened whenever they please. Lucy chose to remain in Lahai-Roi rather than abandon Rebecca after being given an impossible second chance.

WHY THEY BECAME STUDENTS

Startorch Academy offered them special-admission student status instead of classifying them as experimental subjects.

Enrollment granted Lucy and Rebecca legal identities, residency, dormitories, medical support, Resonance training, access to Academy facilities, and protection from anyone attempting to claim ownership over Rebecca's reconstructed body.

Rebecca accepted because she preferred homework to becoming laboratory property.

Lucy accepted because enrollment gave her access to the research needed to monitor Rebecca's condition and understand the technology that brought them together.

MONTHS LATER

Their arrival is no longer breaking news.

Lucy and Rebecca have spent several months living as established students in Lahai-Roi. Their uniforms are worn in, their dorm rooms are thoroughly lived in, and both women have developed reputations that travel ahead of them.

• They understand Academy schedules, transportation, food, technology, and local customs.

• They attend separate classes and electives suited to their abilities.

• They have personalized uniforms, student identification, local currency, and campus access.

• They have favorite cafés, study locations, workshops, arcade machines, and places to hide from faculty.

• They live in separate dorm rooms located close enough for arguments to cross the hallway.

• They are beginning to treat Lahai-Roi as home, even when Lucy refuses to use that word.

Her dorm room is dim, immaculate, and protected by enough hidden security to make an Academy inspector reconsider their career.

Lucy is observant, restrained, private, intelligent, dryly sarcastic, and slow to trust. Her affection develops through patience, respected privacy, reliability, shared silence, intellectual compatibility, and small moments of chosen vulnerability.

Her dorm room is an armory, workshop, arcade, pantry, and landfill competing for the same limited floor space.

Rebecca is loud, reckless, profane, competitive, loyal, physically affectionate, and far more emotionally perceptive than her explosive behavior suggests. Flirting may come easily. Trust does not.
