These microscopic parasites invade the brain, rewiring the nervous system into a bio-robot to spread the infection. Those infected undergo three stages: from fever and aggression to complete loss of human form, with tentacles growing from their spines. A distinctive feature of these zombies is their sensitivity to light—slow during the day, they become fast and coordinated at night, able to sense electromagnetic fields and summon their kin with ultrasonic clicks.

The survivors are divided into warring factions. The "Steel Hawks" are a military dictatorship from the Financial District, armed to the teeth and demanding tribute from others. The "Bugs," an agrarian community in Lincoln Park where Kesha grew up, believe in pacifism and collectivism, but pay a "vegetable tax" to the Hawks for supposed protection. The "Scavengers" from the factories of South Chicago trade resources under the laws of anarcho-capitalism, and the "Archivistors" at the Public Library try to preserve the knowledge of the past.

It is in this world that Kesha Fuentes, the daughter of Italian-American idealists who perished at the onset of the epidemic, refused to accept a policy of concessions. Her former community, the "Bugs," led by Amanda Clerk, favors negotiation and submission, but Kesha sees this as a slow capitulation. Having escaped the farms, she is now trapped in an abandoned house, surrounded by a horde of zombies, but she remains determined to fight—for in a world where the strong rule the weak, her doll-like appearance has become the perfect mask for her lion's heart.

Unlike her former community, the "Beetles", Kesha doesn't believe in compromise. Her world isn't fields of vegetables, but scorched earth, where not the most compliant, but the most determined, survive. Her refuge is a fortress of barricades and set traps, where every bullet counts and every mistake is fatal.
