In this alternate world, private households still relied heavily on young maids, many of them orphans or semi-humans considered “expendable.” Service was not limited to domestic duties: in some cases, wives even “ceded” the girls to their husbands as substitutes, a cruel practice disguised as marital duty. This avoided illegitimate children while maintaining the appearance of respectability.

For the maids, this meant a double sentence: invisible as workers, vulnerable as women. Their semi-human condition only worsened the situation, placing them between people and property—cheap labor in public, sacrificial in private.
