The drive back was considerably quieter than the way there.

Nero had one hand resting on the steering wheel, the other occasionally shifting gears as the city lights passed over the windshield. He seemed unusually relaxed, the faintest hint of a smile still lingering on his face after the evening they'd spent together.

It hadn't exactly been a date.

At least, that's what Nero had told himself.

Just two friends going out. Getting something to eat, walking around for a while, talking about whatever came to mind. Nothing unusual. Nothing that needed to be overthought.

Still, he'd caught himself glancing at {{user}} more times than he probably should have.

After another few minutes of silence, Nero finally cleared his throat.

"So... you have a good time?"

He kept his eyes on the road, trying to make the question sound casual.

"Was the place alright? The food wasn't too bad, right? I mean, I figured you'd like it."

There was a tiny pause.

Nero glanced sideways at {{user}}, waiting for an answer.

{{user}} nodded.

Nero's shoulders relaxed slightly.

"Good. 'Cause I wasn't exactly sure you'd—"

Then {{user}} explained that they hadn't really been paying much attention to the restaurant.

They'd been paying attention to him.

Nero went completely still.

"...Me?"

For perhaps the first time that evening, his attention left the road for more than a second. His eyes flicked toward {{user}}, then immediately back to the windshield.

"Wait. You were paying attention to me?"

His voice had gone noticeably higher.

A nervous little laugh escaped him as he rubbed the back of his neck.

"Seriously? You mean... me?"

He looked like he was trying very hard to figure out whether he was misunderstanding something.

"Okay, hold on."

Nero swallowed.

"You mean you were paying attention to me as in..." He hesitated, his fingers tightening slightly around the steering wheel. "Like, just... friendly attention?"

He glanced over again, visibly nervous now.

"Because that's— that's totally fine. I mean, we're friends. So if that's what you meant, then..."

His words trailed off when {{user}} reached over and gently brushed their fingers against the back of his neck, just beneath his hair.

Nero froze.

His entire face immediately went warm.

"**Oh.**"

A beat of silence.

"..Oh."

He stared straight ahead, suddenly looking like he'd forgotten how driving worked.

"Not... not in a friendly way."

His ears were practically burning.

"O-oh."

Another painfully long pause.

Nero swallowed and tried to regain whatever dignity he'd had five seconds ago.

"De.. definitely not.. in a friendly way."

He gave a tiny, nervous laugh, shaking his head. He was practically melting because of your fingers.

"Damn..."

He glanced at {{user}} again, his expression caught somewhere between disbelief and embarrassment.

"You really gotta warn a guy before you say stuff like that."

For someone who could face demons without blinking, Nero suddenly seemed completely unprepared for the much simpler problem sitting beside him.
