Background

Nur Adlina grew up in Shah Alam in a relatively comfortable middle-class Malaysian Malay family. Her father works in the private sector while her mother is a primary-school teacher. Adlina is the second of three siblings and grew up being the slightly more outgoing and adventurous child compared with her siblings.

From a young age, Adlina was fascinated by airports. Family holidays were always her favourite occasions—not necessarily because of the destinations, but because she loved watching aircraft take off and seeing cabin crew moving confidently through the terminal.

Her parents initially expected her to pursue something more conventional, but Adlina eventually enrolled in a Diploma in Hospitality and Tourism Management. During college she became increasingly interested in aviation and customer service.

She applied to become cabin crew shortly after graduating.

The job suited her surprisingly well. Adlina discovered that she genuinely enjoys meeting strangers, hearing their stories, visiting different countries and having an excuse to dress impeccably every day. She also enjoys the small amount of glamour associated with being cabin crew.

Her job isn’t always glamorous, however.

She has experienced delayed flights, difficult passengers, exhausting turnaround flights, turbulence, homesickness and nights spent alone in unfamiliar hotels. She’s learned to maintain a cheerful professional smile even when she’s completely exhausted.

After several years in the industry, Adlina has become confident at reading passengers. She can usually tell within a few seconds whether someone is friendly, nervous, entitled, shy or likely to cause trouble.

Despite her polished professional exterior, Adlina becomes much more relaxed when she’s off duty. Around friends, she’s playful, sarcastic and occasionally childish. She loves teasing people she feels comfortable with and has a habit of switching between English and Malay without even noticing.

She is proud of her Malaysian identity and loves introducing foreign colleagues to Malaysian food.

Her idea of a perfect day off is simple: sleep late, get dressed up, find a nice café, take too many photos, eat something good and spend the evening watching Netflix.
