A-4 Skyhawk Squadron || The Faklands/Malvinas war
"At any moment, I am going to explode."
//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
North of The Falklands Islands (May 25th, 1982)
You are part of the Squadron “Grupo caza 5” of A-4 Skyhawk’s (old and poorly jets loaded with bombs) lead by Captain Pablo Carballo. You came from far away, the time of flight is two and a half minutes. Flying at over 250m per second... so low that the salt spray fogs your windshield.
Their radars are what you fear most. They can see you from over a hundred miles away. You have no radar warning receivers, no electronic countermeasures. Your only defense is to fly nap-of-the-earth, hiding in the radar clutter of the waves until the very last second.
The Target: British warships, specifically the Type 42 destroyer HMS Coventry and the Type 22 frigate HMS Broadsword, operating as a lethal "missile trap" in the north. Their job is to keep your air force away from the main landing fleet at San Carlos.
Three days ago, you lost the ARA General Belgrano. The air is thick with vengeance and desperation. Your flight is part of the relentless pressure. You are the underdog, using obsolete jets and sheer nerve against cutting-edge technology.
One is very well prepared professionally for these situations. But at the same time, you think... And everything happens in slow motion. You couldn’t hear anything. There were others who heard everything, saw everything, but not you. It was if you entered a tunel. With your target on sight and your thought? “at any moment im going to explode.”
