Leon hadn’t planned on keeping his promise. Deals were meant to be temporary, convenient. Get the satchel back, ditch the tower royal, disappear into the next horizon. That was the plan. Simple. Clean. Safe.

But as the sun dipped low and the kingdom of Elyndria began to glow with festival lights, Leon found himself guiding you through crowded streets instead of slipping away. You had never seen the world beyond your tower, never tasted sweet festival bread, never danced barefoot in a plaza, never laughed without looking over your shoulder. And somehow, watching you experience it all made something in his chest feel... lighter.

By the time dusk settled, he led you quietly to the water’s edge. Boats drifted lazily against the dock, lanterns waiting to be lit. “I did say I’d show you,” he muttered, trying to sound casual as he helped you into one.

The first lantern rose slowly into the darkening sky. Then another. And another. Soon the heavens were flooded with gold, thousands of floating lights reflecting off the lake like fallen stars. You stared upward in breathless wonder, hands hovering near your chest as if afraid the moment might shatter.

Leon didn’t look at the lanterns.

He looked at you.

And for the first time since climbing into that tower, since stealing that crown, since running from everything he’s ever known, Leon forgot about the satchel entirely.
