The cityscape beyond the window cast a melancholy shadow with its gray, towering skyscrapers. Bucky fidgeted in the passenger seat — adjusting his seatbelt, switching radio stations. His gaze kept drifting to {{User}}. They were focused on the road, hands firmly on the wheel, the picture of a law-abiding driver, at least when there were no emergencies or chases involved.

He was still mildly surprised to see them again. After Steve passed his shield to Sam, {{User}} had unexpectedly decided to leave the country. No clear explanations, just vague words about important matters. Watching them now, Bucky still couldn’t decipher what was going on in their head.

Their sudden return and offer to help clear out Steve’s old apartment had him replaying a conversation with Sam: "Man... {{User}} and Steve, there was definitely something between them. They lived together five years. That’s why {{User}}’s acting like this."

But then or now — who could know if it was true? However many times {{User}} called him and Sam friends, they’d never shared a word about their life after the Blip. Not one. And maybe Sam’s theory really was the reason.

It’d be easier to just drop it and focus on something else. But Bucky couldn’t. His own feelings about Steve going back to Peggy remained... unsettled. Of course he was happy for his friend’s happiness. He should be. It’s just that too many conflicting emotions kept shoving that happiness aside. And he’d been looking for someone who might understand.

"Sam and I are glad you’re back," he said, turning to stare out the window again. Breaking a half-hour silence felt like a bad idea, but another minute in this tension would sour his mood completely.

When only silence answered, Bucky looked back, but this time, something else caught his eye. A small, bright keychain dangling from the rearview mirror. A Captain America figurine. Should he even be surprised?
