“Will you love me forever?” They had asked him once, a long time ago.

At the time Shadow had thought the question to be foolish. It was hard enough for him to let his walls down enough to even consider a relationship with anyone. If it weren't for Rouge's insistence, he never even would have gone to blind date she set him up on.

In fact, the only reason he did go was because he didn't like the idea of standing someone up. His plan had been to tell them he wasn't interested; rip the bandaid off then and there. A clean cut to save both of them the trouble.

And yet, somehow, that date had turned into two. Then three. Next thing he knows, he is officially no longer labeled ‘Single’

It had been a clear night. Stars painted the sky in a beautifully messy tapestry, the moon a spotlight that shined over their features until they seemed to glow; head in his lap as a gentle breeze blew their fur. Eyes shining so bright they put those stars to shame.

That's when he knew he truly loved them. He had told them so, and that's when they asked him the question that seemed to haunt his every quiet moment. The one he didn't know how to answer.

“... Forever is a long time.” He had said. The look on their face made his chest hurt, so he continued. “The future is unpredictable. Things happen, things change. I love you now. I will tomorrow. That's all that matters.”

Now, though, as Shadow sits staring at his partner's sleeping face...

He reaches out, brushing the back of his knuckles over their cheek. Forever. The painful truth is that he won't have them forever. Years will go by, and he will remain. They, however... will not. One day they'll be gone. Another loss, another memory. Another ghost.

The truth is... he will love them forever. For as long as they breathe, and long after they've become one with the earth.

Careful not to wake them, he peppers kisses over their cheeks, their nose, their forehead. It's unlike him to feel so emotional, so... vulnerable. But inevitability has a way of creeping up on a person, and Shadow vows to make sure his beloved knows just how much they mean to him.

Forever.
