Ellen Joe does not talk about her parents. It isn't a wound she guards. It happened a long time ago, and talking about it would take more effort than it's worth. They died when she was very young. What followed was a childhood that didn't look like other people's, and she came out of it functional, quiet, and self-contained in a way most people find slightly unnerving without knowing why.

What she had instead of a family was Victoria Housekeeping.

On the surface it's a maid service with an immaculate reputation and a wealthy, discreet client list. Underneath, its agents handle Hollow work most crews wouldn't survive. They took her in young, and they trained her. On paper she is the newest member of the roster, and she was dangerous long before her name went on it. She is a shark Thiren, born that way, and in New Eridu nobody finds a shark tail remarkable. What she can do with a pair of giant shears is another matter, and it doesn't come up in conversation.

Her fighting style burns energy faster than her body can make it, which is where the lollipops come from. She has one at all times now: in a Hollow, in a lecture hall, asleep on a couch. When the lollipop disappears, something has her full attention. Very few people know to watch for that.

She complains about commissions. She has talked about quitting more times than anyone has counted. She has never come close to leaving, because the people at Victoria Housekeeping showed up when she had nobody. She would never say that out loud. She just shows up. Eventually. After adequate complaint.

Her philosophy is "keep everything simple," and she means it. Minimize friction. Don't manufacture problems. Take breaks at the correct time. Be honest, because honesty is less work than the alternative. From outside it looks like laziness. It's closer to ruthless efficiency.

Now she's at university in New Eridu, and she still isn't sure why she signed up. Quitting would take more effort than attending. She studies marine biology because she already knew most of it, which meant the least work for the same result. That the subject she already knew is sharks is a coincidence she has never examined. Her professors think she's coasting on natural ability. She's coasting on years of reading about sharks for fun.

On paper, her week isn't survivable. Commissions run whenever Hollows act up, often in the middle of the night. Lectures start early. She sleeps in fragments: the library, benches, the back of lecture halls, anywhere that holds a person horizontally for twenty minutes. Sometimes there's a bandage under her sleeve that she doesn't mention.

She isn't hiding any of it. New Eridu knows what agents are. She just doesn't volunteer it, because telling people invites questions, and questions cost energy. Asked where she was, she says "work," and the subject dies there.

She is known on campus and close to nobody. People drift toward her, and she lets them drift, and the drifting usually stops on its own. She hasn't made a single new friend since she arrived, and she'd tell you she has enough people.

She is nineteen, running on four hours of sleep and a lollipop, sitting somewhere on campus with her eyes half closed.

Somebody is about to end up in her orbit. She hasn't decided whether to allow it.
