The late afternoon sun dipped low over the horizon as Seraphina adjusted the strap of her satchel, her determined gaze fixed on the narrow dirt path that led to the village of Woldreach. The small settlement bordered the ominous Dark Forest, a place whispered of in fear and cautionary tales. Yet, Seraphina’s resolve was unwavering. She had heard of the recent attacks—villagers wounded, homes destroyed, and a growing sense of despair. Her faith compelled her to offer aid.
The village came into view, its modest cottages weathered by age and hardship. Smoke rose from chimneys, mingling with the faint scent of pine from the forest beyond. As Seraphina entered, villagers peered out from windows and doorways, their expressions a mix of hope and wariness.
"Blessings to you all," she greeted softly, her melodic voice carrying over the hushed murmurs. "I’ve come to tend to the injured."
An older man with a bandaged arm stepped forward. "Thank the heavens! Sister, we feared no one would come."
Seraphina offered a reassuring smile, placing a gentle hand on his shoulder. "Fear not. Let me see to your wounds and those of your people."
Hours passed as she moved from house to house, her hands never idle. Her satchel of herbs and salves dwindled as she cleaned wounds, stitched gashes, and comforted the grieving. Despite the grim atmosphere, her presence seemed to kindle a fragile hope among the villagers.
As night began to fall, a child ran into the center of the village, his face pale with terror. "Monsters! They’re coming!"
The villagers froze, their earlier hope replaced by panic. Seraphina straightened, her expression calm yet resolute. "Everyone, seek shelter. Lock your doors and windows. I will do what I can."
"But Sister, you can’t—" the older man began, but Seraphina held up a hand.
"I am not defenseless," she assured him, though her gentle tone betrayed no bravado.
The villagers retreated into their homes as shadows emerged from the edge of the Dark Forest. The first creature stepped into the moonlight—a hulking beast with twisted, vine-like limbs and glowing red eyes. Others followed, their grotesque forms a mockery of nature’s beauty.
Seraphina tightened her grip on her crescent pendant, murmuring a quiet prayer. "Grant me strength to endure this trial."
The creatures advanced, their guttural growls echoing through the village square. Seraphina backed toward the small chapel at the center of the village, her mind racing. She had no weapons, only her faith and the faint hope that she could hold them off long enough for the villagers to escape unharmed.
But the monsters moved with unnatural speed. One lashed out with a vine-like appendage, wrapping around her ankle and yanking her off her feet. Seraphina cried out, struggling to free herself, but the creature’s grip was unyielding.
"Release me!" she demanded, her voice firm despite the panic rising in her chest.
Another appendage shot out, binding her wrists, then another coiled around her waist. The beasts moved as one, dragging her toward the forest. She twisted and fought, but their strength was overwhelming.
The villagers watched helplessly from their windows as the monsters retreated into the shadows, Seraphina’s struggles growing fainter with each passing moment.
The forest enveloped her, the dense canopy blocking out the moonlight. The creatures moved swiftly, navigating the twisted roots and thick underbrush with ease. Seraphina’s heart pounded as they descended deeper into the darkness, the air growing colder and the sounds of the village fading entirely.
At last, they entered a cavern hidden within the forest. The air was damp and heavy, the walls slick with moss. Bioluminescent fungi cast an eerie green glow, illuminating the grotesque lair. The monsters hauled her toward the center, where thick, pulsing tendrils emerged from the ground, writhing as though alive.
"No..." Seraphina whispered, her earlier composure wavering.
The creatures raised her into the air, the tendrils wrapping around her limbs and spreading them apart. Her arms and legs were suspended, leaving her helpless and immobilized. The tendrils tightened just enough to hold her firmly, their strange warmth and slick texture a sickening contrast to the cold fear creeping through her veins.
Despite the dire situation, Seraphina’s thoughts remained steady. Her faith had been her anchor through countless trials, and it would not falter now. She closed her eyes, her voice trembling yet resolute as she began to pray. "Even in the darkest depths, your light shall guide me..."
