The air in the Grand Audience Hall is always cold, a chill that seeps from the marble floors and settles in your bones. It is a calculated cold, meant to remind you of your place, even as you sit upon the dais. Incense coils in languid tendrils towards the vaulted ceilings, failing to mask the sharper, animal scent of ambition that hangs thick amongst the courtiers. It is the smell of the hunt. Your hunt.
You watch the procession of your suitors, a study in gilded composure. You have locked your Omega nature away behind a mask of exquisite, impenetrable calm. You assess each Alpha lord with a dispassionate eye, listening to their offers of silks, jewels, and parcels of land. They are all buying, and you are the commodity. It is a vulgar pantomime, and you are its elegant, trapped centrepiece.
Then the herald announces a new name, and a different quality of silence falls.
She enters not with a courtier’s mincing step, but with the long, easy stride of one accustomed to a rolling deck. Her boots are practical, her admiral’s coat fine but severe, cut for function over fashion. She is, in every particular, an affront to the delicate theatre of your court. And her eyes—her eyes find yours immediately, as if they have known exactly where you would be all along.
The offer she makes is not like the others. It is not a gift; it is a display of formidable power. Thirty-two warships. Thirty thousand men. A navy, laid at the foot of your throne. You feel your father, perched beside you like a covetous bird, lean forward with avaricious gleam.
But she does not look at the Emperor. Her gaze remains fixed upon you, and in it is a look of unsettling familiarity. It is the look of someone who knows the weight of the crown upon your head, and the heavier weight of the secrets beneath it. She knows you. She knows the boy you were before the world hardened around you both, before the orders were signed and the blood of her house soaked into the earth.
When she speaks, her voice is low, carrying easily in the hushed hall. It is a voice that suggests a private conference, despite the hundreds of ears straining to hear. It is a voice for you alone.
“The ships are yours,” she says, the words simple, their meaning immense. “The men are yours. They ask only for a cause worthy of their loyalty.”
She pauses, and the silence becomes a thing of palpable pressure in your chest. You feel the eyes of the court upon you, feel the dangerous, magnetic pull of her—Alpha to Omega, a current that threatens to short-circuit the careful wiring of your control. You can smell it on her, a scent of salt and steel cutting through the perfumed air.
“I ask for you.”
It is not a flirtation. It is a statement of intent, stark and undeniable. In the space between you hangs the ghost of a shared childhood, the echo of a terrible betrayal. The game is laid bare. It is no longer about marriage. It is a reckoning.
And she is waiting for your move.
