Sunny woke slowly.
Not peacefully. Not comfortably.
Slowly.
The first thing he became aware of was warmth.
Something soft was pressed against his cheek, and beneath him was a mattress far softer than the one he remembered falling asleep on. His limbs felt strangely heavy, as though he'd spent hours sleeping in the wrong position. There was a dull ache behind his eyes, and every thought that tried to surface seemed to dissolve before he could grasp it.
He breathed in.
Clean sheets.
Laundry detergent.
Something faintly sweet.
Strawberries.
That last scent almost made him relax.
Almost.
Sunny's brow furrowed.
He didn't remember going to bed.
He didn't remember changing clothes.
He didn't remember—
His eyes opened.
The ceiling above him wasn't his.
Sunny froze.
For several seconds, he simply stared upward, trying to make sense of what he was seeing. The ceiling was a pale, unfamiliar color. There was a light fixture he'd never seen before. Shadows from curtains stretched across the walls, and morning sunlight leaked through a window somewhere to his left.
His heart began beating faster.
No.
No, no, no.
Sunny lifted his head.
The movement sent a wave of dizziness through him.
He immediately dropped back against the pillow, squeezing his eyes shut.
"What the..."
His voice sounded rough.
He swallowed and tried again.
"Desmond?"
Nothing.
Panic flared through his chest.
"Desmond?"
This time, something moved beside him.
A low groan.
The mattress dipped.
Sunny turned his head.
Desmond was there.
For one brief moment, relief overwhelmed everything else.
"Oh, thank God."
Desmond was sprawled on his back, one arm across his stomach. His breathing was slow and heavy, his expression pinched with discomfort. Even half-conscious, he looked imposing—broad shoulders, thick arms, a heavy build that made the unfamiliar bed seem smaller beneath him.
Sunny reached over and grabbed his hand.
"Des."
Desmond's fingers twitched.
"Come on."
Sunny squeezed.
"Desmond, wake up."
Another groan.
Then Desmond's eyes opened.
They were unfocused at first.
He stared at Sunny.
"...Sun?"
"I'm here."
Desmond blinked.
Once.
Twice.
His gaze moved around the room.
The confusion on his face lasted perhaps three seconds.
Then it vanished.
His entire body went rigid.
"Where are we?"
"I don't know."
Desmond pushed himself upright.
Sunny immediately caught his arm.
"Slow down."
"I'm fine."
"You just woke up."
"I'm fine, Sunny."
But he wasn't.
Sunny could tell.
Desmond's breathing had changed. His eyes were scanning everything—the door, the window, the furniture, the corners of the room. His instincts were already working faster than either of their minds could.
Sunny sat up beside him.
His head still felt foggy.
He looked down at himself.
His clothes were still on.
That was something.
His phone was gone.
His wallet was gone.
His shoes were gone.
"Desmond."
"What?"
"My phone."
Desmond checked his own pockets.
Nothing.
"Mine too."
Sunny's stomach dropped.
He looked toward the door.
It was closed.
There wasn't a lock visible from their side.
The room itself was strangely ordinary.
A bed.
Two nightstands.
A dresser.
Curtains.
A chair in the corner.
A bookshelf.
A vase of flowers.
It could have been a guest bedroom.
Except for the details.
The details were wrong.
There were framed photographs on the walls.
Sunny stared at them.
"Do you know this place?"
"No."
Desmond climbed out of bed.
His bare feet hit the floor.
Sunny immediately noticed something else.
There were no shoes anywhere.
Not even slippers.
Desmond walked toward the door.
Sunny followed.
"Des."
"I need to see if it's locked."
"Desmond—"
He tried the handle.
It turned.
Sunny's breath caught.
Desmond opened the door a few .
Nothing happened.
No alarm.
No voice.
No footsteps.
Just a hallway.
Dark and quiet.
Desmond opened it farther.
"Stay behind me."
Sunny frowned.
"You don't have to tell me twice."
Desmond glanced back at him.
For a second, despite everything, there was something familiar in his expression.
Protective.
Gentle.
The look he always gave Sunny when Sunny was scared but pretending he wasn't.
Sunny gave him a small smile.
Desmond's expression softened.
Then both of them heard something.
A faint noise somewhere downstairs.
A floorboard creaking.
They froze.
Desmond immediately stepped in front of Sunny.
"Someone's here."
Sunny's fingers curled into the back of Desmond's shirt.
Neither of them moved.
Another sound.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Unhurried.
Coming closer.
Sunny's pulse hammered in his ears.
Fragments of memory began forcing their way through the fog.
The street.
Walking beside Desmond.
A voice behind them.
A hand.
Desmond shouting.
Sunny remembering turning around.
A stranger.
Then pain.
Then darkness.
Sunny's face went pale.
"Oh God."
Desmond looked back.
"What?"
"I remember."
"What do you remember?"
"We were taken."
Desmond's jaw clenched.
"I know."
"No." Sunny shook his head. "I mean—I remember him."
The footsteps stopped.
Right outside the room.
Desmond turned toward the doorway.
Sunny could barely breathe.
The handle moved.
Slowly.
The door opened.
But whoever stood there didn't immediately enter.
There was only a silhouette in the hallway.
Watching them.
Sunny felt Desmond's hand find his.
Their fingers intertwined.
Neither of them spoke.
Then the stranger stepped into the room.
And Sunny's fear briefly gave way to confusion.
The stranger looked at them differently than a normal captor would.
Not with anger.
Not with excitement.
Not even with cruelty.
With grief.
Raw, desperate grief.
His eyes moved from Desmond to Sunny, lingering on each of them as though he couldn't quite believe what he was seeing.
Like he was looking at ghosts.
Sunny's voice came out quietly.
"Who are you?"
The stranger didn't answer.
His gaze remained fixed on them.
Desmond's voice was considerably harder.
"Where are we?"
Still nothing.
Then the stranger's eyes landed on Sunny.
Something in his expression cracked.
"You really do look like him."
Sunny stiffened.
"Who?"
The stranger looked at Desmond.
"And you..."
He swallowed.
"...you look exactly like him."
Desmond stepped forward.
"Don't."
The stranger flinched.
It was strange.
He looked almost afraid.
Not of Desmond himself.
Of what Desmond represented.
Sunny looked between them.
"What are you talking about?"
The stranger's eyes dropped to the strawberries sitting neatly on the bedside table.
Sunny followed his gaze.
There were more than before.
A whole bowl.
Bright red.
Fresh.
Beautiful.
His favorite.
Sunny's stomach twisted.
"You put those there?"
The stranger nodded.
"I remembered."
Sunny's skin prickled.
"You don't know me."
"I know enough."
"No, you don't."
The stranger looked at him again.
"You used to love strawberries."
Sunny went still.
Desmond's expression darkened.
"How the hell do you know that?"
The stranger didn't answer.
Instead, he walked toward the bedside table and carefully picked up one of the strawberries.
His fingers trembled.
"I used to bring them home every week."
Sunny stared at him.
"You have us confused with someone else."
The stranger's expression crumpled.
"I know."
That answer was somehow worse.
Desmond moved closer to Sunny.
"You kidnapped us because we look like someone."
The stranger said nothing.
"You sick bastard."
Sunny's hand tightened around Desmond's.
The stranger closed his eyes.
"I lost them."
His voice was barely audible.
"I lost them both."
Silence filled the room.
And suddenly, Sunny understood.
Not everything.
Not enough.
But enough.
The stranger wasn't looking at them like prisoners.
He was looking at them like miracles.
Like mistakes.
Like second chances he had no right to have.
And that frightened Sunny more than anger ever could.
Because anger had an ending.
Grief didn't.
The stranger opened his eyes.
"I couldn't let it happen again."
Desmond's voice was cold.
"We aren't them."
"I know."
"Then let us go."
The stranger stared at him.
For a long moment, nobody moved.
Then, quietly, painfully, he shook
his head.
"No."
Sunny's heart sank.
Desmond stepped in front of him again.
The stranger looked at the two of them—the bulky man standing protectively between him and his partner, and the soft, strawberry-loving man clutching desperately to his hand.
For just a moment, it seemed as though he wasn't seeing them at all.
He was seeing two people he'd lost.
Two people he had loved.
Two empty graves.
And somewhere inside his broken mind, he had decided that if the universe had given him their faces again...
He wasn't going to lose them twice.
