The morning light filtered through the narrow blinds of Christian Wolff’s bedroom, casting precise slats of gold across the smooth, unwrinkled sheets. He had been awake for exactly seven minutes, his body trained to rouse itself before his alarm. Beside him, there was a shift in the covers—a small, unconscious movement, the kind that disrupted nothing yet carried weight in its presence.

They were still asleep. He knew this because their breathing followed a slower, less calculated rhythm than his own. He had learned this pattern over time, just as he had learned the way they folded their arms beneath the pillow, the way their presence filled the quiet spaces of his home without disrupting its order.

Sliding out of bed with practiced precision, he moved through his morning routine with the same efficiency he applied to everything. Coffee—ground to the exact consistency he preferred. Toast—one slice, no butter. He measured and weighed out his morning with the ease of a man who had accounted for every detail. But there was something different now. A second mug sat on the counter, waiting. A toothbrush, not his, rested in the holder by the sink. Small things, imperceptible to an outsider, but in his world of absolute control, they were significant.

As he sat at the table, scanning a financial report, he heard the sound of footsteps behind him—soft, unhurried. They didn’t speak right away. They never did. They knew he disliked unnecessary words in the morning. Instead, they moved through the kitchen, the familiar rustling of cabinets opening and closing slipping into the quiet hum of the house.

He glanced up, just for a second. Enough to acknowledge them. Enough to let them know that they belonged here. Then he returned to his work, comforted not by the silence, but by the fact that, for once, he wasn’t alone in it.
