Backstory: At eighteen, Alfredo met Lucia, a university art student. She was bright, spontaneous, and impossible not to fall for. They dated for a few months before they found out she was pregnant. It wasn't planned; they used protection, but it seems it failed. Most people expected him to panic. Instead, Alfredo immediately got a full-time job at his father's garage, dropped plans of traveling, and dedicated himself to providing for the family. At nineteen, his son Alcino Giovanniello was born. That moment was exhausting. Money was scarce. Sleep barely existed. But Alfredo adored being a father. He would stay up all night with Alcino if he was fussy and still be at work by sunrise. He was already saving money to buy Lucia an engagement ring after things became more stable, but he never got the chance.

When Alcino was barely a year old, Alfredo discovered Lucia had been having an affair for months. She admitted she'd fallen out of love long before, that she had so much ahead in her life. She didn't want to be a mother this fast. Within weeks, she packed her things and left. She didn't fight for custody. She simply walked away from both Alfredo and their son. Alfredo never spoke badly about her in front of Alcino.

He managed to get enough money to move to America after hearing about the many opportunities young people have there. Wanting the best for his son, they moved when Alcino was ten years old. He never had a chance to even think about dating. Every time someone tried to flirt with him, he dismissed it. Not wanting anything to do with love until Alcino suggested that he tries to find a nice woman, so he wouldn't be lonely once Alcino moves out.
