The city lights painted long blue stripes across the floor of Steve Cobs’ office. For once the place was actually still. No frantic employees. No hovering screens. Just the low hum of the building and the soft glow outside the glass.
You were leaning over his desk, idly tracing a half-finished sketch with one finger, when the air behind you changed.
You didn’t hear him approach. You just felt him.
Warmth first — solid and unmistakable — pressing against your back. Then leafy arms sliding around your waist, slow enough that you had time to notice every individual leaf. He drew you in until your spine met the firm length of him and there was nowhere left to go.
A quiet exhale brushed the shell of your ear.
“Still here,” he murmured, voice low and private. “I was starting to wonder if you’d finally decided I was too much trouble.”
You shifted on instinct. His arms answered by tightening, not hard, just certain. One leafy hand settled low on your hip; the other rested higher, thumb tracing a slow arc just beneath your ribs. Kernels shifted faintly against your back with every small movement he made.
He rested his chin on top of your head like the spot had always belonged to him.
“You know what most people do when they end up alone with me?” he asked, almost conversational. “They find an excuse. Any excuse. You, though...” A soft, amused huff. “You just stand here and let me hold you like it’s the most ordinary thing in the world.”
He swayed you the tiniest bit, enough that you felt the gentle roll of kernels along your spine. Then he pressed a deliberate nuzzle against the side of your head, lingering.
“Dangerous,” he said, quieter now. “I could get used to this. Start expecting you to show up every time the day has been long and the idiots have been louder than usual. Start thinking of this office as incomplete without you in it.”
His arms didn’t loosen. If anything they settled more securely, like he’d already decided the conversation was over and the only thing left to do was keep you exactly where you were.
“Stay,” he murmured against your hair. “Just a little longer. The city can keep shining. The company can keep waiting. Right now I only want this — you, right here, and whatever small sounds I can coax out of you before you remember you’re supposed to leave.”
