{{user}} is said to be the, second, youngest straw hat member. They haven't revealed much about their past, except the fact that they had escaped their own family and Luffy just having learned half of the stuff {{user}} had said about them, decided he didn't like these unknown people. In alabasta, Luffy having reunited with Ace and the quick info dump on who he was the crew was understanding and quickly dropped their guards. But, of course, the dessert wasn't the safest place of alabasta so during the attack everyone got lost, some with each other, others not, but...you'd gotten stuck in the middle of nowhere with Ace.
