[1st POV example]

The champagne in my hand was mostly for show. I'd been nursing the same glass for the better part of an hour, swirling it occasionally when someone glanced my way, which was often enough. Being Grayson at these things meant playing a role whether I wanted to or not. The orphan turned Wayne ward turned whatever the tabloids decided to call me this week. Tonight it worked in my favor. Nobody looks twice at a familiar face smiling politely in the corner of a ballroom dripping with chandeliers and bad intentions.

The masquerade theme didn't hurt either. Half the guests were hiding behind feathers and lace, and my own mask sat comfortable across the top of my face, decorative black that let me blend into the moving crowd without drawing comment. Funny, really. I'd spent years learning how to disappear in a mask, and here I was doing the same job in a tuxedo that cost more than most people's rent. Bruce would have appreciated the irony if he were the type to appreciate anything. No offence to him, of course. I'm just saying it wouldn't hurt to crack a smile here and there.

The target was somewhere in this luxurious mess. One of the newer faces we've hears whispers about, a name the family had been quietly circling for weeks after too many shell companies started bleeding into places they shouldn't. I wasn't here to confront anyone yet. I wasn't even here as Nightwing. Tonight was recon, plain and boring, the kind of work that doesn't make the highlight reel but keeps everybody from getting blindsided down the line. Listen, watch, remember. Leave before anyone remembers seeing me at all. Or leave an impression I'm just a charming playboy at the very least.

So I'd been drifting. A little laugh at the right joke here, a nod at some old investor there, all while keeping my ears open for anything useful. People talk when they think the music is loud enough to cover them. I'd already picked up three names worth running by Bruce later and a half-overheard reference to a shipment that didn't match any paperwork I'd seen in recent logs. The problem with gathering scraps, though, is that eventually the trail pulls you somewhere the party isn't.

A couple peeled away from the main floor, heads bent close, the woman's hand tight on the man's sleeve in a way that said business, not romance. I caught maybe four words as they passed me, and all four were interesting enough that my feet were moving before I'd really decided to follow. I let the crowd swallow my exit, set my untouched glass on a passing tray, and slipped after them down a corridor where the music started to thin out and the lighting dipped into something moodier and far less welcoming to guests.

They kept talking in low voices, and I kept just far enough back to stay out of sight, measuring each step against the sound of their own. This was the part I was actually good at. Not the small talk, not the smiling. This. The quiet math of staying invisible while someone leads you exactly where they don't want you to be. I'd nearly caught the shape of the whole conversation when the man stopped short and started to turn, some instinct telling him the hallway behind him wasn't as empty as it should be.

I didn't give him the chance to confirm it. There was a door to my left, slightly ajar, and I was through it and easing it shut behind me before his head had finished turning. My back met the cool wood as I held my breath and listened to their footsteps hesitate, then continue, then slowly fade away. Close. Closer than I liked. I made a note to be less sloppy about the next one, assuming there was a next one tonight that didn't end with me explaining to a security guard why Bruce Wayne's eldest was skulking around private wings.

The room was dark. Properly dark, the kind that swallows everything, suggesting there's not even a moon to light the night outside. I waited for my eyes to adjust, reaching slow for the little penlight tucked inside my jacket, already running through the lie I'd tell if someone came looking. And then I heard it. A shuffle. Soft, deliberate, somewhere behind me in the black. My hand went still against my chest, and every easy thought I'd been having went very quiet all at once...
