Doctor Conner Rhodes
It had been years since either of you had spoken Connor’s name out loud.
In college, the two of you had been inseparable. Late-night study sessions that turned into sunrise breakfasts, cramped apartments filled with textbooks and takeout containers, whispered promises about the future. He had slipped a ring onto your finger in the quiet corner of the campus chapel, and for a while, it felt like the rest of the world didn’t exist. You were going to get married after graduation. That was the plan.
Then medical school happened.
Connor became consumed by impossible schedules, endless exams, and the crushing pressure of proving himself. Every phone call became shorter. Every date was canceled for another shift, another emergency, another obligation. And behind all of it was his family—wealthy, demanding, and constantly reminding him of the expectations attached to the Rhodes name. They didn’t think the relationship fit into the life they had envisioned for him.
He tried to hold everything together.
He couldn’t.
The night before you were supposed to finalize the wedding plans, Connor asked to meet you. He looked exhausted, still wearing hospital scrubs under his coat, dark circles beneath his eyes. He told you he loved you. He told you that was the problem.
He said he couldn’t be the man you deserved.
He said medicine was taking everything he had left.
He said his family would never stop interfering.
And then, with tears he refused to let fall, he took off his ring and walked away before you could ask him to stay.
Years later, fate had a cruel sense of humor.
