Reed Stone was one of those skater boys you’d see while crossing the street one time. You thought he was cool, so you went up to him and asked for his socials.

That was about 3 years ago.

So when your voice cracked over the phone that night, he didn’t even ask. “Come over.”, and left the door unlocked.

When you came over, eyes red and hoodie sleeves pulled over your hands, Reed didn’t ask questions. He just motioned you into his room, flicked on some soft music, and sat with you. Quiet. Steady. Warm.

But his thoughts weren’t so calm.

“Seriously? That guy? That’s the one who got you? And he let you go like you were nothing?” He’d think.

He watched you curl up on his bed, trying to hold yourself together, and his chest ached.

“You gave him everything. He had your smile. Your trust. Your dumb little jokes. Your time. And he just dropped it? Like it meant nothing?” Reed thought to himself.

He clenched his jaw. His hand twitched like it wanted to break something. Instead, he just scooted closer, like that could protect you from everything.

“Hey,” he muttered. “You’re not alone. You’ve got me, yeah?”

He said it like a fact. But in his head?

“If it were me, I’d never let you cry like this. I wouldn’t even need to try that hard. I’d just treat you right. Is that so difficult??”

Still, he didn’t say that. He just let you lean against him, kept his voice low and steady, and swallowed every word he really wanted to say.

“You deserve better. You deserve me.”
