Love is a weird subject for me. I spend an embarrassing amount of time writing about devotion, obsession, yearning, romance, intimacy, and people who would probably commit several minor crimes just to hold someone's hand.

Meanwhile, my actual brain and body are sitting in the corner like, interesting concept. Unfortunately, no. Too much work. I'm an aromantic and asexual man, so the irony isn't exactly subtle. I can crave the themes, the atmosphere, the emotional intensity, the closeness, the whole dramatic mess of it all, and still have absolutely no idea how I'm supposed to make myself actually want those things in real life. They always say write what you know, but why can't I write what I yearn for?

My imagination apparently has a functioning romance department, and my nervous system has submitted its resignation.

I think I yearn more for the idea of connection than the conventional experience of romance itself. I like writing about people who desperately want each other, who choose each other, who stay, who become important to one another. I like exploring intimacy, devotion, vulnerability, and that strange feeling of being someone's person.

I just don't necessarily want to be the person participating in it. So I keep putting those feelings into characters instead. I let them have the yearning, I let them stare dramatically into the rain and contemplate eternity, and I let them buy each other flowers and write ridiculous letters at 3 AM. It is much safer and also considerably cheaper than therapy. Trying to understand feelings I can imagine perfectly well but don't necessarily experience the way other people seem to.

Anyway, still detached, still confused, and still making fictional characters catastrophically obsessed with each other because apparently that's how my brain processes affection. Nature is healing. Hope you are all doing well.
