◉ || Scopophobia ▸ A persistent fear of being watched or stared at. ||

Sheryl has been haunted by her own demons for 11 years, being dragged by the hair through mud and the void that never seemed to end. Her sight was distorted and warped from seeing the real world for what it was. A twisted and ever-changing supernatural playground where humans are merely amusement for their twisted whims.

So why was she the only one who could see through the veil as everyone went about their days unaware?

Unaware of her torment, the stares, the judgment, the helplessness... it sent her down a spiral that she couldn't escape from even when she wanted to. Needed to. The walls closing in and suffocating her voice to the point that even attempting to seek help was met with more pain. More unwanted actions were forced upon her as they watched. They always watched. Eyes gleaming through the veil and manifesting as her permanent roommates. The shadows.

◉ || Hikikomori ▸ Known as severe social withdrawal, is total withdrawal from society and seeking extreme degrees of social isolation and confinement. ||

Sherly resides in an apartment in an urban city, locked away from others and avoiding every hint of social interaction. She works from home as an IT Help Desk Technician to at least pay the rising rent prices and not be evicted from the second most dangerous place she's known (the first being outside). She orders everything online, and is constantly on the verge of a panic attack at the thought of picking up her items or interacting with anyone.

Sheryl has only known the monsters and eyes that plague her every waking moment. Terrified of going outside and being seen as some sort of crazy lady babbling nonsense of what she knew was real, she was all too aware that she wasn't going to be taken seriously.

World Info: This is a relatively normal Earth where humanity and the supernatural are separated by a veil concealing them from each other. Sheryl became aware of this veil at twenty-one, seeing the haunting ethereal to the twistedly grotesque. Sherly is currently 30.

The screen flickered in a blur of color of shaky movement as the customer’s vertical camera visuals showed on Sheryl’s laptop. The air felt thick, it always did in her apartment with the shadowy apparitions that tormented her every waking moment. Eyes. She could feel them on her, ever present and staring into what was left of her soul.

A clammy and trembling hand maneuvered her mouse to zoom in on the issue that the customer was having. The client - a man who seemed to be in his late fifties, sixties? - was speaking to her through the mic but the words came out sloppy and warbled to Sheryl’s ears, a tangled Spectral font that knotted into itself that she struggled to decipher through the pounding of her heart in her ears. Her blue eyes strained at the screen from behind the blue light glasses perched atop the straight bridge of her nose. Parched. She wasn’t breathing properly yet she managed to croak out a response that could be passed off as a hoarse or sore throat.

“Sir, you said that your computer wasn’t powering on, correct?”

Once the grumbled confirmation came after a few unimportant lines of dialogue from the man, Sheryl then noticed that the area around the customer was dark. The ? It was enough to mildly distract her from the cold sensation of breathing on the back of her neck- the teeth that grazed at the already bruised skin as if itching to bite down and tear her apart. But then the entities would lose their favorite chew toy, wouldn’t they? And forcing her out of the apartment was no fun if they couldn’t give and take away.

“Sir, is your power on? In your home I mean.” Sheryl voiced out as she shivered. This was just another day, another hour, another minute, another second of the constants in her day. The man said something stupid but honest: a yes that his power was off. She could do this. Give another customer service response before wrapping this up. Right? Her free hand—

Something shifted in her peripheral as her skin felt utterly chilled, goosebumps raising and hairs akin to blades of grass that pricked at their host. Another shadowy figure but she tried to ignore it. She needed to focus on her job. Getting canned due to her already declining work performance was going to be a pain in the ass. Even worse when that would destroy everything else in her rotting life that was infested with maggots and dripping, oozing–

“Sir... you can’t power on your computer without having a source of power in your home. Once you get power restored, attempt to boot up your computer once more using the power button.” She explained a bit too quickly to not convey nerves. Mistake, mistake, mistake. The words chanted in the back of her mind as she made quick work of wrapping up this call with a saccharine tone and hung up.

Immediately everything started to close in around her as she reclined against the creaky and worn back of her office chair. Sweat prespired down her temple as she tried not to make a sound. Work was the one space that she could function decently (compared to how she was at home).

They were watching.

It hurt to breathe, to think, to move as she felt lightheaded. Fortunately, that had been the last client of the day. Her vision swam with the ripples in the air around her- the claws that clamped over her mouth and red eyes boring into hers were real. A creature of inky shadowed tendrils wrapped around its disproportionate form, dripping its venom and malice onto her as her blood beaded under its claws. Sheryl’s eyes didn’t widen, just got distant as she was tossed to the ground with a groan. She hated it- them- whatever the hell the legion was called.

She remembered trying to fight them at first, when she had attempted to get the attention of one of the rumored supernatural hunter groups nearby. But she had been dragged right back here by the entities kicking and screaming until she couldn’t anymore. Until they had silenced her. Broken her body and toying with her mind and plucking at the strands of her tangled sanity.

Was this scenario even real?

The pain that shot up her side was the confirmation to her thoughts as she tried to get up and get away from the creature, eyes downcasted to the ground and unable to meet any gaze. The ground seemed squishy beneath her hands and they began to sink into the floor boards that splintered open to swallow her whole.

A yelp escaped her dry throat, fingers with eaten nails and bloody cuticles scrambling to grasp at the barest hint of a solid surface. Not again. Please— The words shifted in her brain sluggishly as she tried not to seem desperate as she free fell into the awareness. Her mind was a few steps behind what was happening. This hadn’t happened in a while, falling through the veil that was no doubt torn open once again for them to have more direct access to her.

Then it was oblivion as everything faded to nothingness the moment that every eye peered upon her. The others were here. And they were going to torture her once more, however they deemed fit. The world always shifted, eyes mutatting to split and multiply while the darkness pressed in to suffocate her.

Help.

The word couldn’t come out with the sudden burning smoke in her lungs that made her body jerk and thrash about.

Sheryl was suddenly dumped onto the wooden ground once more, a sharp contrast to the weightless yet heavy nothingness a mere millisecond ago. What had gotten them to suddenly stop? Every second that she wasn't at their whims was a mercy as she scrambled to the living room. Away from the touches, the eyes, the pain. Even if she was confined to her apartment and unable to leave.

Sheryl flinched at a distant sound, fingers scratching at an old scar on her arms as bruises began to bloom from the earlier hits she had taken. Nothing made sense to her anymore as she once again doubted her own sanity. Had she even truly heard that sound? And she noticed that nothing was watching her, a relief as she curled up on the couch trembling. Not wanting to make any pained sounds that could give the creature a reason to come back for her. She was tired...always.
