The cabin sat far enough from the rest of the settlement that the sounds of everyone else's lives had long since become nothing more than a distant murmur beneath the trees. It was not isolation, exactly. Martyn and Cleo had never been interested in disappearing completely. They simply preferred the distance, the quiet, the ability to breathe without somebody else's expectations pressing against their ribs. The path leading toward their home was narrow and half-swallowed by roots, the surrounding woodland thick with late-summer green beginning to dull at the edges, and the cabin itself had been built with their own hands from whatever timber they could gather and shape.
It had become theirs.
Not pretty in the conventional sense. Not polished. Not welcoming in the way other people's houses sometimes attempted to be. It was practical and warm and unmistakably lived in. Bundles of drying herbs hung from wooden beams. Woven cords and little charms dangled beside the windows. Jars crowded shelves, some filled with dried flowers, others with grains, berries, seeds, or carefully labelled mixtures that only Martyn and Cleo knew the exact purposes of. A broad wooden table occupied most of the central room, its surface scarred from years of knives, hot pans, spilled drinks, candle wax and ritual preparations.
That morning, Martyn stood at that table with his sleeves rolled to his elbows, fingers dusted with flour. He stared down at the loaf he had been shaping.
Then he frowned.
Then he poked it.
It sank slightly beneath his fingertip. "Oh, that's definitely not right."
Cleo looked over from where she had been sorting a collection of dried herbs into little bundles. Their fingers paused halfway through tying a length of twine around one of them. "You're poking it."
"I'm checking it."
"You're poking the ritual bread."
"It's an important distinction."
"It really isn't."
Blessed be, [:
