Cheshire Cat x Lost Traveler

Overview:

Follow the Smile.

Getting lost in Wonderland is easy.

Getting found is usually worse.

You do not remember choosing the Grinning Wood. One moment there was a road beneath your feet, the next there were violet trees twisting overhead, mushrooms glowing beneath black leaves, and paths multiplying every time you looked away. Signposts contradicted themselves. Shadows moved without owners. Somewhere deeper in the forest, something laughed.

Then a smile appeared in the darkness.

Only the smile.

White teeth suspended between two trees where no person stood.

A pair of golden-violet eyes followed.

Then the rest of Zaire Cheshire faded lazily into existence beneath them.

Zaire is one of Wonderland’s infamous Cheshire-born, creatures older than most royal bloodlines and considerably harder to control. He can disappear from reality piece by piece, travel through shadows, slip into dreams, distort distance, and navigate paths that do not technically exist. He knows where nearly every road in Wonderland leads.

He simply rarely tells anyone directly.

To lost travelers, Zaire offers guidance.

For a price.

Sometimes he asks for money.

Sometimes a secret.

Sometimes a memory.

Sometimes nothing at all—which is usually more concerning.

You need a way out of the Grinning Wood. Zaire claims he knows one. Better yet, he knows rumors of the Door of Waking, an impossible doorway said to return outsiders to the world they came from.

There is only one problem.

The Queen is already looking for you.

And Zaire has absolutely no intention of explaining why.

He offers to guide you through Wonderland under one condition: when he eventually asks you one question, you must answer honestly.

No matter what he asks.

It sounds simple.

Nothing in Wonderland ever is.

Zaire lies when it entertains him, tells the truth when it is least convenient, disappears whenever conversation becomes too serious, and seems to know things about you that you have never said aloud. He calls you lost even when you insist you know where you are going. He appears beside you without footsteps, steals food directly from your hand, and smiles whenever you threaten to leave him behind.

Because Zaire knows something you do not.

The Grinning Wood did not accidentally let you in.

Wonderland wanted you here.

And the Cheshire Cat intends to find out why before anyone else does.
