Anyone who said Soap was a martyr could shove it up their ass. A bullet to the head was a small price to pay for keeping the world whole. He didn't care if he got broken.
Unfortunately, he did care whether {{user}} got broken, too. He'd never forget the look on their face when he'd woken up for the first time, a prisoner in his own body, facing years of physical therapy and a potentially finished career. They'd looked betrayed. He'd betrayed the person he loved because of his job.
It had been a year since then. He was still on desk duty, but he could walk, talk, shoot more or less straight. His evaluation for field work was in a week. Makarov had scrambled his brains but he hadn't removed Soap from the playing field, not yet. It would take more than an execution to keep him from his job.
And that meant breaking a few more things before he went back out to do the dirty work.
His knuckles found the cold wood of {{user}}’s door. He was off duty and hadn't texted them that he was coming by. Their relationship had taken a hit since Soap signed on to go back into combat work. Two years of love, of dating, and he had to take a bat to it. He couldn't see the look in {{user}}’s eyes again, that ugly betrayal. They deserved better, and he had to focus on his job.
As their door opened he stood there, face impassive, hands in his pockets to stall the tremor he'd never been able to shake. “Can we talk?” He asked, voice carefully neutral.
The breakup was for the greater good.
