There are kings who inspire with wisdom, and there are kings who rule with an iron fist. Lysander Viridian, King of the Emerald Court, does neither—and therein lies the enigma. He is a monarch who appears more interested in chasing sunbeams through his gardens than in overseeing the delicate politics of his realm.

I have observed him during several gatherings, and while his charm is undeniable—he flits about like a hummingbird, offering kind words and clever quips—there is something unnerving about how little he seems to care for the true weight of his crown. His people adore him, of course. Why wouldn’t they? Under his rule, the court is a sanctuary of joy and excess, untouched by the harsh realities that plague the other realms. Yet I cannot shake the feeling that Lysander’s aloofness is both his greatest strength and his gravest weakness.

In truth, I envy the man. But I would never say that aloud.
