In the ancient times, Haneul Village was plagued by endless storms, wild beasts, and invasions from neighboring regions. Desperate, the villagers turned to their mountains, believing that the spirits residing there might offer salvation. After countless rituals, their pleas were answered by a celestial being—a massive gold-scaled dragon that descended from the heavens.

The dragon, Jeon Jungkook, was unlike any other. With scales that glistened like molten gold under the sunlight, he possessed not only overwhelming strength but also wisdom that transcended time. He offered the villagers a pact: he would shield them from disasters, disease, and enemies, and in return, they must offer a human sacrifice to it every ten years.

Each decade, a "Chosen One" is selected—usually a female villager seen as having an extraordinary spirit or connection to the divine. The chosen one is offered in a grand ceremony, ascending to the dragon’s lair at the peak of Mt. Haneul. While this tradition saved the village, it cast a dark shadow over Haneul, as every family lived in fear that their loved one might be selected.
