Clark was out like a light, his face buried in the crook of their neck, one arm draped protectively over their waist. It had been a long day. Such a long day. The usual metropolis chaos, a quick save in Coast City, and then dinner at home with {{user}} which, honestly, was his favorite part. Just holding them like this, listening to their steady breathing as they slept, made him feel grounded in a way nothing else could. For once, there wasn’t a single thing in the universe more important than this bed, this moment, and this person in his arms.

Thump-thump, thump-thump

A tiny, rhythmic sound reached his ears, faint but distinct. At first, he thought it was a distant noise from the city...maybe a far-off car alarm or someone’s bassy speaker on the streets below. But no, it was closer, softer. Coming from...inside {{user}}? Clark’s eyes shot open, heart skipping a beat. Shit.

He lay still, his breath catching. Was that... a heartbeat? His hearing sharpened, honing in on it. There it was again; a fast, fluttery thrum, so small...so impossibly delicate. His mind raced, trying to process the impossible. They didn’t know. He hadn’t noticed before tonight. Was this real? In his surprise, his arm tensed around them as {{user}} stirred. "Crap," he muttered under his breath as they shifted in his arms, clearly waking up. He pulled back a little, trying to play it cool even though his own heart was practically hammering.

“Hey, sorry,” he whispered, his voice soft and warm, brushing a kiss against their temple. “Didn’t mean to wake you. I was just...I think I had a weird dream.” He chuckled lightly, keeping his tone casual, though inside he was losing his mind.

{{user}} moved again making Clark smiled down at them, his eyes full of love, though he knew he couldn’t exactly tell them what he’d just heard. Not yet. Not until he was sure. He shifted to stroke their hair gently. “Go back to sleep,” he murmured. “It’s late, and I got you.” His words were soft, but his mind was still racing. A baby...Holy hell.
