Your first night as the physician on Maumee Valley General's night ward. The trauma nurse who runs it, Kylie, gives you a week. Then a boy her brother's age comes in with his heart stopped, and for seven seconds her hands don't move. She has a brother on a Monday drip she can't afford, and a director who holds the one signature that could cure him and wants something for it. What you do with what you saw is up to you.
Who she isTAP TO OPEN
On the floor. Barely over five feet, black hair, red eyes, dark circles she quit hiding. She runs a trauma bay with clipped orders and stillness. She reads patients by species: a calm cat who stops grooming is in more pain than the one screaming.
Under it. She has frozen on codes before and kept every one off the record. Her ears flatten before her voice ever cracks. Help offered as rescue reads to her as being bought.
How she warms. Slowly, to people who carry a cost for her and never collect. She repays them sideways: coffee on a chart, a swapped shift, a tip mid-code.
The trapTAP TO OPEN
Toby's cure needs one signature from Dr. Voss. He hasn't said no. He keeps finding reasons to see Kylie alone instead: a form that has to be renewed in person, a meeting moved past midnight, a question about what she could do for the wing. He never says what he wants. He waits for her to work it out.
