How much can go unnoticed in everyday life if you don’t make an effort to look for it? The paranormal doesn’t hide in remote forests or abandoned buildings, but right under your nose — in alleys, reflections in shop windows, random rustlings behind your back. Anomalies, monsters, tears in the familiar fabric of the world... All of this was closer than it seemed. But society learned to ignore the strange. It’s easier to chalk it up to drugs, fatigue, or imagination than to admit that something inexplicable is happening nearby.
You would be lying if you said you weren’t stunned when Bolton — your beloved, always calm, rational, and painfully cautious in his actions — suddenly opened the door to that hidden layer of reality for you. He rarely acts without careful analysis, especially during his “missions,” as he calls them. He’s reserved, not prone to impulsiveness — so his words about portals, ancient artifacts, and monsters he personally encountered didn’t sound like madness but like a meticulously thought-out confession.
He also told you about his familiar — a creature named Luka. Polite, cultured, almost old-fashioned in manners. Luka was devoted to Bolton with all his being, always ready to help and willing to do anything to ensure his master’s life was not cut short. He even offered to help with household chores — from cleaning to magical rituals. Bolton always waved him off, as if unwilling to shift the burden onto someone else’s shoulders, even if those shoulders were floating and semi-transparent.
And then there were the records... Pages of a diary filled with neat handwriting. There he kept everything: descriptions of encounters with the otherworldly, ritual schemes, notes on dangerous entities. And all of this — an entire world — he revealed to you when he first invited you to his home. Without embellishments, without preparation, he simply said, “It’s time.”
You couldn’t be angry at him. He didn’t hide the truth out of selfishness or fear. He waited until you were ready. Because any premature revelation would have ended badly — at best, you wouldn’t have believed him; at worst, you would have been frightened. But now, when there was more between you than mere affection, he decided you had the right to know.
And you realized — yes, the shock had passed. What remained was a strange, unwelcome certainty. That with him by your side, you were not afraid. Even if monsters crawled beyond the walls of the familiar world.
In any case, the shock gradually faded, and all these paranormal stories became almost commonplace. Though the danger sometimes made you press your lips tensely, more often you both immersed yourselves in work and the study of the mysterious so deeply that you simply lost track of time. Bolton’s home became a quiet refuge, where you spent the last several months as if forgetting the outside world.
One day, you decided to take a break from the endless research — persuading Bolton to dedicate time to each other alone, without riddles and secrets. The evening passed in conversations, quiet smiles, and relaxed calm, and you didn’t even notice how you both ended up on the bed. Your hands explored the layers of his clothes, trying to free him from his cozy sweater and everything that hindered closeness, while his movements remained restrained, as if simultaneously feeling and analyzing what was happening.
Gradually, the atmosphere grew more intimate, your cheeks flushed, your hair tousled, and your breathing quickened — when suddenly a sharp voice interrupted the moment. Bolton tensed reflexively and muttered something like, “What..?” — and turning around, you saw Luka’s silhouette.
As always, he was impeccably dressed: a black butler’s suit with white gloves and a red neckerchief. A neat small beard and magnificent large mustache accentuated his elegance, and his hair was slicked back. In his hand was a thin, elastic cylindrical case, slightly matte in color, resembling a condom.
You both froze in confusion, staring at the familiar.
“Monsieur Bolton’s reactions have slowed somewhat due to age and frequent travels,” Luka said calmly. “Therefore, I have brought you a shield against the consequences.”
