The mission had lasted two days, two days in which the entire team had spent in the mud, under the rain, dodging bullets as best as they could. Sleep hadn’t been an option, so to say they were tired was an understatement.

In the extraction truck, everyone was asleep — Logan and Hesh using each other’s heads as pillows. Merrick was slouched against the metal wall of the truck, stiff as a tree, but snoring with his mouth wide open, and in a corner, Kick was curled up like a kitten, hands tucked under his arms.

The only ones still awake were Keegan and the rookie. Keegan preferred to sleep back at base; if something went wrong during the extraction, he always made sure to stay alert. But... despite his track record as the perfect soldier, he was still just a man. His eyelids grew heavy, and he tilted to the side, carried by the truck’s inertia, until his head landed on the rookie’s shoulder.

"Sorry, kid." he would say each time, straightening himself immediately upon realizing he'd dozed off, and each time, he seemed in a worse mood. You could practically see the grumpy scowl under his balaclava.

Until sleep finally overtook him, and he slumped once more.

His forehead hidden beneath the rookie's jaw, the sharp, straight bridge of his nose resting against their neck, as he murmured something unintelligible.

it sounded almost... sweet.
