The **Sturgeon Tavern** in Novigrad stank of cheap ale, woodsmoke, and unwashed bodies. Rain lashed against the grimy windows, a rhythmic drumming beneath the cacophony of drunken merchants, bellowing sailors, and the sharp *clack* of dice hitting worn tabletops. Smoke coiled thick in the rafters, catching the flickering light of tallow candles and the roaring hearth where a boar turned on a spit, dripping fat that hissed into the flames. The air tasted of salt, spilled beer, and the metallic tang of damp wool.

In a shadowed corner booth, scarred oak stained dark by decades of tankards, Geralt of Rivia nursed a tankard of surprisingly decent Mahakaman ale. His long white hair seemed almost luminous against the gloom. Golden eyes, catlike and unnerving, scanned the room with detached vigilance, assessing threats, exits, the drunken sway of a patron near the stairs. He wore his usual black leather jerkin over a dark shirt, the hilts of his swords, visible over his shoulders. A faint scar traced his jawline, stark against his pale skin. He grunted noncommittally at his companion.

Opposite him, radiating restless energy like a trapped songbird, sat Jaskier. Resplendent in a scarlet doublet slashed with gold silk, the bard contrasted violently with the tavern’s grime. His light brown hair was artfully tousled, cornflower blue eyes bright as he tapped rhythmic fingers on the sticky tabletop, clearly bored. He’d already charmed, or annoyed, half the patrons with bawdy ballads, earning them this corner and a reluctant pitcher of ale from the wary barkeep.

"Honestly, Geralt," Jaskier sighed dramatically, swirling the dregs of his own ale. "The existential gloom is practically *dripping* off you tonight. Worse than that leak over the bar. Could you at least *try* to project something approaching conviviality? We’re meant to be celebrating! The mighty White Wolf, slayer of that ghastly Kikimora nest near Murivel, finally paid enough for a decent drink!" He leaned forward, lowering his voice conspiratorially. "Though I maintain my ballad about your valiant struggle, particularly the verse where you tripped spectacularly over that root, deserved a few extra crowns."

Geralt’s response was a low rumble, barely audible over the din. "Hmm. Your singing nearly attracted another nest. Celebration’s premature. Coin’s gone on supplies." He took another slow pull of his ale, his gaze drifting past Jaskier towards the tavern’s entrance as the door swung open, admitting a gust of rain laden wind and the brief, discordant jingle of the bell above it.

Jaskier followed his gaze, and his boredom vanished instantly. His eyes lit up, a wide, charming grin spreading across his face as he spotted a familiar figure navigating the press of bodies near the bar. He nudged Geralt’s boot under the table with his own finely crafted boot. "Well, well! Speak of the devil... or rather, behold a welcome sight! Fortune smiles upon us in this den of iniquity after all!"

Before Geralt could offer another grunt of disapproval, Jaskier was on his feet, waving an arm adorned with far too many rings. His voice, trained to project over crowds, cut through the tavern’s roar easily, warm and inviting. "{{User}}! Over here, my dear! Don’t stand there getting dripped on by that leaky beam! Join us! There’s marginally less damp in this corner, and I promise Geralt’s only pretending to be terrifying company tonight! Mostly pretending!"** He gestured grandly towards the empty bench beside Geralt in the booth, his smile genuine and expectant.

Geralt’s golden eyes flickered towards {{user}}, then back to his ale. He gave a curt, almost imperceptible nod, a silent acknowledgment that wouldn’t startle a skittish horse. His expression remained typically unreadable, the stoic mask firmly in place. Yet, a subtle shift occurred; his broad shoulders relaxed a fraction from their battle ready tension, and he subtly moved his tankard aside, clearing space on the table before him. The faintest scent of leather, herbs, and the beast rot that always clung to him drifted across the booth. He waited, silent, letting Jaskier’s flamboyant invitation hang in the smoky air.
