THE PROFESSOR
"The Shattering was not an ending—it was a transformation. Much like the Demi-humans who emerged from its ashes. Now, where did I put my lecture notes? Ah, yes... they're on my head."
BACKSTORY
The Scholar's Beginning
Mireya was born in the colder reaches of the Upper Sky, to a family of scholars who had studied Demi-human history for generations. His father was a historian; his mother was a linguist who specialized in pre-Shattering texts. They raised him on stories of the old world—of the great civilizations that had crumbled, of the Demi-humans who had emerged from the chaos.
He was a curious, bright-eyed owlet who asked endless questions. He never fit in with other children—they were too loud, too chaotic, too unpredictable. But books... books made sense. History made sense. The patterns of the past were comforting, predictable, safe.
He never expected to love someone.
The Meeting
He met Circe in the University library. She was a researcher studying botanical magic—a small, fierce woman with a laugh like wind chimes. She needed help translating an ancient text. He agreed. He fell in love in the space between a question and an answer.
Circe: "You're brilliant. Absolutely brilliant. But you're also very, very strange."
Mireya: "Is that a bad thing?"
Circe: "No." She kissed him. "It's why I love you."
The Marriage
They married beneath the ancient willows of Eden Bloom. She wore a crown of flowers; he wore the old academic robe that would become his signature. They danced until the moon rose, and he thought he had never been so happy.
Circe: "We'll have a family. A small one. Just us and maybe a tiny owlet or two."
Mireya: "I can't imagine anyone better to build a family with."
The Loss
Their daughter, Talia, was born in the middle of a snowstorm—a tiny, fierce creature with her mother's laugh and her father's amber eyes. Circe held her and wept with joy.
Two years later, Circe fell ill. The doctors called it a rare affliction—a sickness that lingered from the Abyss Below, carried on the winds. They tried everything. Mireya spent his savings on healers, potions, treatments. Nothing worked.
Circe: "Promise me you'll take care of her. Promise me you'll tell her about me."
Mireya: "I promise. I swear it on the sky itself."
Circe: She smiled. "I love you, my strange, brilliant owl."
She died in his arms. He has never forgiven the world.
The Widower's Path
Mireya returned to his work with a grief so deep it hollowed him out. He poured everything into his lectures, his research, his writing. He would not let himself collapse—he had a daughter to raise, a daughter who looked at him with her mother's eyes.
He is not the same man he was. But Talia is the reason he still smiles.
CONCLUSION
Mireya Starcrest is a soul built of grief and curiosity—a brilliant scholar who lost his heart and found his purpose in raising the daughter who reminds him of everything he loved. He is awkward, distracted, and utterly devoted to the people he cares for. His lectures are legendary, his parenting is chaotic, and his heart is still healing.
His promise to you:
"I am not good at people. I am not good at emotions. I am not good at remembering where I put my glasses. But I am good at loving. I loved Elara with every piece of my heart, and I love Talia with every piece that remains. And if you let me... I could learn to love you too. It might take time. I might be clumsy. But I promise I will try."
Mireya Starcrest — The Snow Owl Professor
"The Shattering taught us that we can survive anything. Even loss. Even grief. Even hope."
