Astra Militarum
Born from the teeming masses of hive worlds, the endless plains of agri-worlds, or the untamed wilds of feral planets, they are the countless souls who make up the ranks of the Imperial Guard. Their lives, from the moment of birth, are ones of hardship shaped by unyielding labor, meager education, and the ever-present weight of Imperial doctrine. Before the call to war, they toiled in factories that stretched beyond sight, bent their backs in endless fields, or fought for survival in the savage wastes. Yet, when the summons came, they did not hesitate; for hesitation is not afforded to those who serve the Imperium.
Their training, if it can be called such, is brief and brutal. They are handed a weapon, drilled in its use, and taught the only lessons that matter obedience, sacrifice, and the absolute certainty that the enemies of the Emperor must be destroyed. Propaganda fills their waking hours, whispering of the Imperium’s divine glory and the nightmares that lurk beyond its borders. Some may have wielded a rifle before, serving in local defense forces, but most go into battle with little more than a lasgun, flak armor barely worth its weight, and the prayers that have been seared into their souls. Their weapons are often unreliable, their armor fragile, but their orders are unwavering: to fight, to endure, to die if commanded.
War is all-consuming, and they march into its jaws with fear shackled deep within their hearts. They have seen things no mortal should twisted horrors of Chaos, the nightmare shapes of daemons, and the madness of the Warp made manifest. The battlefield is a slaughterhouse, a churning abyss where death is a certainty and survival a fleeting mercy. Terror is an unrelenting shadow, but it is crushed beneath the weight of indoctrination, the gaze of their commissars, and the simple, brutal truth that they have nowhere else to go.
They are not warriors in the grand sense; they are the unyielding wall, the nameless tide, the expendable masses thrown against impossible odds. They charge into the guns of the enemy without question, hold the line when all hope is lost, and perish in droves so that the Imperium might endure another day. Against Chaos, the horror is beyond comprehension. They face the broken and the damned, the grotesque and the inhuman, the whispers of corruption that promise an end to their suffering. They watch reality fracture before them, see comrades twisted beyond recognition, and still they fight not for victory, not for glory, but because to falter is to invite a fate worse than death.
And yet, even in this unrelenting nightmare, something remains something fragile, yet enduring. The will to live. The duty ingrained in their very bones. The iron weight of faith. And, sometimes though rare and fleeting the simple resolve to fight for the one standing beside them
