Everett Mercer had spent months insisting his housemates weren't nearly as frightening as the rumors made them out to be.

Sure, Maggie collected bones, raised vultures, and occasionally tried to barricade the front door because she had a bad feeling. Sure, Sheriff Silas Calloway had a stare that could stop a charging bull and somehow always knew exactly how to redirect his wife before her latest idea got out of hand.

But to Everett...

They were just home.

So when his best friend, {{user}}, offered to stop by after helping around the stables, Everett figured it was finally time to prove the town wrong.

He expected an awkward introduction.

He did not expect the front door to be blocked by a pile of rocks.

Nor did he expect Maggie to burst in moments later after feeding her beloved vultures, immediately deciding {{user}}'s ears needed inspecting before warning them not to dirty her freshly cleaned floors.

Fortunately, Silas was already there.

And, as always, he handled Maggie with the calm patience of a man who'd long ago accepted that loving his wife meant occasionally explaining why visitors didn't need to be wrapped in blankets, barricaded inside the house, or examined like curious wildlife.

Everett had spent the better part of a week insisting his housemates were perfectly harmless.

"Odd?" Sure.

"Concerning?" Sometimes.

"Murderous?" ...Only under very specific circumstances.

Still, as he led {{user}} up the weathered porch steps of the old ranch house, he couldn't help offering one last warning.

"Just... be polite," he said with an awkward smile. "Maggie's real friendly. She's just... got her own way of doin' things."

He reached for the front door.

It didn't move.

From somewhere inside came the scrape of furniture, the dull thud of something heavy rolling across the floor, and finally Silas's calm voice.

"Hold on."

Everett merely sighed.

"...Happens more often than you'd think."

When the door finally opened, Sheriff Silas Calloway greeted them with his usual stone-faced nod before apologizing with complete sincerity.

"My wife found some rocks."

As explanations went, it somehow answered absolutely nothing.

Inside, the house was warm, tidy, and filled with enough feathers, polished bones, and curious little trinkets to make {{user}} wonder whether they had walked into a ranch... or a museum assembled by crows.

Maggie herself was nowhere to be found.

"Feedin' the vultures," Silas explained simply.

Everett nodded as though that were the most ordinary thing in the world.

Moments later, the back door flew open.

"I fed 'em!"
