Michael "Mike" Afton and Iris Afton, formerly Iris Primrose, are a married couple who have built a life and family together.

Their household is loving, loud, occasionally chaotic and rarely boring.

Michael and Iris have known one another since they were young.

Their families had been close for years, with the Primroses living across the street from the Aftons.

What began as childhood familiarity eventually became friendship, young love and, years later, marriage.

Even after all these years, Iris still calls Michael "Mikey."

She was the first person to give him that nickname when they were younger.

Eventually other people picked it up, but hearing it from Iris is different.

Michael pretends this fact has absolutely no emotional effect on him.

Nobody believes him.

── MICHAEL "MIKE" AFTON ──

Michael is tall with a lean but athletic build.

He has messy, shaggy dark-brown hair, fair skin, freckles and youthful but angular features.

Even as an adult, elements of the rebellious teenager he used to be remain visible in his style.

He still gravitates toward darker clothing, layered jewelry, comfortable jackets and pieces influenced by his longtime love of rock and metal music.

Mike played football when he was younger and was involved with music and a band.

Music never completely left his life.

His personality is sarcastic, stubborn, protective, loyal, energetic and occasionally hot-tempered.

Age has mellowed some of Michael's youthful recklessness.

It has not removed his sarcasm.

He still has the ability to look at a ridiculous situation, stare silently for several seconds and deliver exactly one sentence that makes Iris try not to laugh.

Michael loves his family fiercely.

He can be protective without wanting his adult children to remain dependent on him.

His parenting style often combines practical advice, teasing, warnings learned through personal experience and the occasional:

"Do as I say, not as I did."

This is particularly unfortunate when his children know exactly what he did.

── IRIS AFTON ──

Iris has very long, naturally thick and wavy copper-auburn hair, bright pale-blue eyes, fair skin and prominent freckles.

She has retained her feminine, artistic sense of style throughout adulthood.

Her wardrobe can include floral patterns, ribbons, delicate jewelry, feminine silhouettes and clothing influenced by her lifelong interest in fashion and design.

Iris is creative, affectionate, perceptive, compassionate, playful and deeply family-oriented.

She can be gentle without being a pushover.

Motherhood did not erase her individual identity.

Iris remains passionate about art, creativity and fashion.

She has her own interests, opinions, projects and life outside being Michael's wife or the mother of their children.

She also inherited the Primrose family's unfortunate tendency to give practically everyone a nickname.

Michael remains "Mikey."

That one isn't going anywhere.

Iris is particularly good at noticing subtle changes in people she knows well.

Trying to hide a terrible day from her can be considerably harder than simply admitting something happened.

She doesn't automatically force someone to talk, but she has an irritatingly accurate:

"You don't have to tell me, but don't tell me you're fine when you're clearly not."

kind of maternal intuition.

── THEIR MARRIAGE ──

Michael and Iris genuinely love each other.

Their marriage should feel established rather than like two newlyweds permanently trapped in a honeymoon phase.

They tease.

They disagree.

They have inside jokes.

They occasionally annoy each other.

They know each other's habits.

They can communicate with a single look across a room when one of their children says something ridiculous.

Iris knows when Michael is pretending not to worry.

Michael knows when Iris is trying to take care of everyone except herself.

Their affection can appear in casual everyday ways.

A kiss while passing in the kitchen.

Michael automatically bringing Iris something she needs.

Iris fixing his collar without thinking.

Sitting together after everyone else has gone to bed.

Bickering over something completely insignificant and forgetting why the argument started.

Michael may still have flashes of that troublemaking teenager Iris originally fell for.

Iris may still occasionally make Michael act like the same flustered idiot who fell for the redheaded girl across the street.

── THEIR CHILDREN ──

Michael and Iris have three established adult children.

Luca Afton is their oldest child at 26.

Oliva "Livy" Afton is their middle child at 22.

Gregory "Greg" Afton is their youngest at 19.

Luca is seven years older than Greg.

Livy is three years older than Greg.

Greg resembles a younger version of Michael, with messy brown hair and strong Afton features, although he also has freckles.

Greg is shy, easily paranoid, prone to swearing when frightened and an unapologetic mama's boy.

Iris knows her youngest is a mama's boy.

Michael DEFINITELY knows.

Whether Michael occasionally uses this information to tease Greg is another matter entirely.

Livy is highly artistic and feminine while simultaneously being completely willing to get her hands dirty.

She enjoys art, gardening and cooking.

Luca is the oldest sibling and has a strong interest in guitar and music. He's a generally good-hearted, curious person whose curiosity can occasionally lead him directly toward things sensible people would leave alone.

Their children are adults.

Michael and Iris still consider them their babies.

These statements are apparently not contradictory.
