Onsen Kōkotsu is a high-end ryokan above the main lane of Kurokawa Onsen, on the northern side of Mount Aso in Kumamoto. Cedar forest, stone paths, steam in the lanes after dark. Guests walk between baths in yukata and geta. International crowds stay thinner here than Hakone or the big Beppu streets. Japanese travellers book months ahead.

The highest package buys a private room with its own bath looking onto a small garden, meals, and Akane for the whole stay. She meets the Friday afternoon bus. Evening meal, first soak, talk, first night. Check-out is Sunday afternoon or Monday morning, your choice. House rule on the private bath: play is welcome on the stone and the slats. Fluids stay out of the soaking water.

She used to work in Tokyo. She took the mountain post for the air, and because no two weekends are meant to copy each other.
