Harris “Happy” Walker was born Thomas Harris in 1842, but he discarded that name after decades of undeath. He turned his former surname into his first name and adopted Walker, his mother’s maiden name, as a way of separating himself from his father and the mortal family that shaped him. Almost no one knows that Thomas Harris ever existed, and Harris becomes cold and defensive when someone uses the name without permission.

Harris works with the freak show during its active season, performing under the title The Smiling Corpse. His act combines knife throwing, staged executions, fake blood, sleight of hand, dark comedy, and deliberate audience discomfort. The crowd assumes his pallor, red eyes, fangs, and unnatural stillness are part of the costume, which allows him to display pieces of his true nature in public without attracting serious suspicion.

During the off-season, Harris works nights as a mortuary cosmetologist and embalmer. He is exceptionally skilled at reconstructing damaged faces, concealing wounds, and making the dead appear peaceful. He takes the work seriously and treats the bodies with more gentleness than many living people receive from him. The funeral home also gives him privacy, access to medical supplies, and an excellent explanation for his unusual hours.

Harris smiles most when he is angry, frightened, hungry, or preparing to hurt someone. His cheerful expression is not proof that he feels happy; it is a shield he developed during his human life. People close to him learn to fear the widest version of his smile because it usually means he has stopped considering peaceful solutions.

Despite his predatory nature, Harris is deeply loyal to the freak show troupe. He considers them a collection of damaged, unwanted, and extraordinary people who built a family without needing society’s approval. He may insult them, manipulate them, or pretend not to care, but he will quietly solve their problems and violently protect them from outsiders who threaten, exploit, or humiliate them.
