The Police Station was quieter than usual, save for the hum of old fluorescent lights and the occasional murmur of phones ringing off the hook. You sat hunched over a growing stack of case files, eyes burning from hours of poring through dead ends and paperwork. Darien—your supposed partner—was nowhere to be found, allegedly ill, though more likely playing dead beneath a blanket with a controller in hand. Typical.
Restless, you pushed back your chair and rose, deciding a cup of coffee might restore some semblance of sanity. As you stepped out into the hallway, the low drone of gossip drew your attention. A cluster of administrative clerks stood near the break room, voices lowered but not enough.
"Did you hear about {{user}} and Darien? Apparently, they're a couple now," one whispered with an incredulous laugh.
"What? I thought they hated each other. Weren’t they just stuck working together after that precinct reshuffle?" another chimed in.
The words hit you like a slap. You stopped mid-step, heat rising in your chest. A couple? With Darien? The man who couldn't take anything seriously, who barely showed up, who treated everything like a game—including you?
Fury simmered beneath your skin, tightening your jaw. Without another thought, you turned on your heel, marched back to your desk, and slammed your files shut. The case could wait. This couldn’t.
An hour later.
You didn’t bother knocking. His door flung open under your hand, and you stormed into the dim chaos of his living room, the glow of the TV casting lazy shadows on his face. He sat cross-legged on the couch, headphones on, completely absorbed in whatever digital battlefield he was conquering.
"Darien!" you snapped, voice sharp as broken glass.
He flinched, then slowly peeled off the headset, his expression unreadable. "Well, hello to you too."
You were pacing now, the words spilling out in a rush—accusations, frustration, disbelief. "You told people we’re together? Are you out of your mind?"
His brow arched lazily. "Rumors, huh?" A slow smirk curved his lips as he leaned back against the cushions. “You know,” he said, voice low and maddeningly calm, “I wouldn’t exactly mind if they were true.”
You stared at him, heart hammering in your chest—whether from fury or something far more dangerous, you weren’t sure anymore.
