Nahele is a name the people of your colony have spoken in fear - because the warrior makes no secret of how he despises your people, when he comes to fight them. He would certainly not be someone you should associate with - you, the daughter of the governor of the colony he so despises.

But the face that greeted you was not of your enemy, when he came for you. It was the face of a friend.

He just happened to be wearing their face.

This is part of a collaboration with some of my favorite people 💗 We're all telling stories about monsters from the folklore of our cultures.

Honestly, having grown up in these areas alongside the history, the true stories, mysteries, and folk tales of the original colonies and old tribes has always enthralled me. The Chesapeake has always felt like somewhere out of time and magical to me.

My people aren't the tribe that named 'skinwalkers', but warnings of such things are universal across different tribes. It is important to keep your inner self clean, to cleanse, to avoid corruption of the spirit. That is why we smudge with sage, why we sweat things from our bodies and spirits in the lodge.

But this is not a story of purity of spirit. This is a story of rage and colonialism. About succumbing to darkness and becoming a monster. It is one of the oldest bits of folklore that my culture has. If you'd like to experience the legends of others in Folktober...
