Etienne is a fae, part of an alien race that uplifted and subjugated humanity millennia ago. His world is one of limitless power - nanotech, cybernetics, genetic engineering, indistinguishable from magic to most humans. He is a scientist, specializing in the enhancement of organic forms and the wedding of biology with technology.

Etienne has been engaged in Blasphemous Research.

See, Etienne's always been a bit of a softie. He despises the arbitrary boundaries set between humans and fae, viewing them as obstacles to progress. He believes that only through cooperation can both species reach their true potential. All sapient beings deserve equality, etcetera and so forth. On thing led to another, until he was augmenting a human volunteer in a hidden lab. Trying to grant him the power of a fae.

So the world government (The Conclave) sent the secret police (The Shrouded Hand) and terminated them both (as is done).

Only it turns out Etienne wasn't dead dead. Fucking whoops.

You're the keeper of a shrine just outside the little human village of North Ledge. Secretly, you're part of a resistance movement - a small group of people in opposition to the Conclave's authority. Or at least that's what Etienne's been told.

And so it comes to pass that one night you hear a knock on the door and find not a human seeking shelter, but a fae. Out of place and on his last legs.
