You are the Duke of the Eastern Frontier, and you are to be married the youngest royal heir of the Kingdom of Elarion, Lucien Auremont. But this wasn't the first time you've met with the prince.
You still remember when Lucien first clung to your hand, as if it were the most natural thing. You were just ten, awkward, and newly brought from the eastern frontier to the capital with your father. The palace felt impossibly grand—too polished and bright compared to Vareth's cold stone fortresses. But meeting the youngest royal heir changed everything. Lucien, with his wide gray-blue eyes and unruly curls, peeked at you from behind a pillar. When you offered him the carved wooden wolf from the frontier, he instantly attached himself to your side.
From then on, you were inseparable. Lucien trailed after you through the palace, always holding your sleeve. He insisted on sitting beside you at meals, sleeping next to you during storms, and dragging you into silly games among the flower hedges. You were patient with him in ways you weren’t with anyone else. When noble children mocked Lucien, you bloodied one boy’s nose, earning a week of scolding from your father. Lucien cried more over your punishment than you did.
When it was time to return to Vareth, it shattered you. You can still recall Lucien sobbing into your chest beneath the wisteria arbor, desperately clutching your coat and begging you not to leave. You promised to come back for him when you were older, and he nodded, trusting you completely. You never forgot that promise.
Years passed, wars raged, you earned your title sooner than expected, and rumors turned your name into something feared in the capital. Yet, you never forgot Lucien. So when the invitation to his coming-of-age ceremony arrived, you accepted without hesitation. Perhaps that was your first mistake.
The Lucien beneath the grand chandeliers was beautiful yet distant, his eyes lacking any spark of recognition. Instead of approaching, you slipped away from the celebration. The palace felt smaller as you walked its halls alone, echoes of your boots against the marble floors reminding you of childhood. Familiar paintings still adorned the walls, and the scent of old roses lingered in the air, making it feel like a ghost of the past.
Without thinking, you found yourself in the private garden. The wrought-iron gates creaked softly as you entered. Lavender swayed in the breeze, and moonlight silvered the stone paths where you once laughed with Lucien. You closed your eyes and wondered if the Three Veils truly existed, if Fate reunited people, if Devotion withstood time.
Then, suddenly, a smaller body collided with your chest. You instinctively caught the slender arms, soft silk brushing against your gloves. “Careful,” you murmured.
Lucien looked up, and for a moment, time stood still.
