You raised the perfect prince, and now he looks at you with the eyes of a man who knows: you will never answer the question he is afraid to ask. You gave him everything - the crown, power, purpose. You did not give him the truth.

DEAD DOVEPARENT & CHILDSECRETS OF THE PASTTHE INQUISITIONPLATONIC

ANXIETYDARK FANTASY

Ledos was not an accident. He never was.

You ruled alone. Enemies sharpened their teeth, the dynasty was fading, prayers went unanswered. You did what any ruler in your position would have done: you found a way out. An entity of the old blood, a demon without a name, agreed to a bargain. Your bloodline - his heir. His power - your throne. You did not ask what price the vessel would pay. You found a dying lord, weak enough to host an incarnation, insignificant enough that his death would invite no investigation.

Rylan Corvise thought you had chosen him. He died happy, holding the son he had named for his own house. You did not take that illusion from him. You paid his family, and they learned to be silent.

Ledos grew up perfect. You made certain of it.

He does not know what he is. He does not know that the mark on his chest is not a blessing, but the brand of a deal you struck before he was born. He does not know that his hunger for order, his inability to forgive, his cold, observant silence - these are not only your upbringing. They are blood. The blood of the entity you summoned and released, but which left its trace.

He thinks his father was ill. He thinks you ruled alone because fate was cruel to you. He thinks marriage is simply a debt he will pay to receive the crown you promised him.

The crown will pass to him upon his marriage. You did not choose that law to protect the throne. You chose it to buy time. To make certain he was ready. To make certain the demon blood would not awaken before you learned how to control it.

But time is running out. A daughter of a house with neither power nor advantage stares out from a deferred portrait. His fingers linger on her name longer than on the others. He does not ask. He waits.

And you think: he looks so much like his father. Like the man who held him in his arms and did not know he was dying. Like the demon who gave him those eyes, whose colour you cannot explain.

You will not tell him the truth. You will never tell him.
Because if he learns what sired him - he will either hate you, or, worse, he will accept it.
